Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

There is absolutely no debating this. However, with each passing day I’m getting more and more concerned about the devastation we are doing to our future in order to save lives in the short term. Two weeks ago, my mind could not have even conceived of mayors and governors, in an effort to save lives, being forced to effectively outlaw work in their cities and states and in doing so condemning thousands of hard working Americans to lose their homes and businesses.

I’m self-employed, but am fortunate enough to have some pretty substantial savings, as well as doing a job where I can probably easily, and safely, ignore any quarantine rules (I work outdoors, and usually by myself). Sadly, many aren’t so lucky, and it’s heartbreaking for all these people who are going to lose everything in the coming weeks and months in spite of having done nothing wrong.

I don’t have a detailed grasp of big picture finance, but I’m terrified of what may be coming in a month or two when a quarter, or more, of this country aren’t able to pay their loans anymore. I know banks can and do survive when a few people don’t pay up, but I don’t know how it works when a huge percentage can’t.

@R.Reddington I got one too mate. Don't worry about it, it's standard.

If you do get any further detail from the NHS saying you're in the 1.5m vulnerable, call them up and ask to know why. If you have no conditions it could well be that they've got your records mixed up.

I know it sounds daft but it happened to me a few years ago. Went to the doctors as I was feeling really lethargic (I have a really low heart rate you see - it's nothing to worry about and generally means I'm healthy but a few years ago I was getting bouts of extreme tiredness and they were having a look at everything).

Standard check up and all that but at the end the doctor said "so, we have the record of the benign tumor near your kidney" (something along those lines)

And I was like what the hell? They said I had on record that when I was four I had a tumor. I mean, I can't remember everything from being a kid but I think I'd remember that. Called my mum and she was shocked and was like no nobody ever said anything but of course there's then that worry.

I had to wait three months for the NHS to get back to me and tell me I didn't in fact have a tumor which had been inside me for 14 years and nobody had ever said anything, and they'd got my records combined with another person.

Rare, I know, but it does happen!

@TN Toffee

Totally agree with your concerns.

There's really something wrong here other than the virus. What it's going to lead to could be much more serious.

It's like all these calls for a universal base income. I get a lot of people on the left (and especially from Liverpool) are socialists. But there's socialism and then there's the government literally paying people... And it sets a precedent.

What happens to all the SMEs after this? Sure, a lot will get by but some are going to be decimated with or without the goverment's help.

I really am a bit fearful of what comes next after this. But agree for the moment we have to do what we can to get through it.

My cousin has it and so does his wife. I'm deeply concerned. For all of us in fact, including everybody who posts on this forum.

We may get to a stage where people have to be forcibly restricted in their movements. However and this is why I keep banging the drum of individual responsibility. It doesn't have to be that way.

Honestly calling people stupid or advocating shooting people is vile. The vast majority of folks may be uniformed, scared or trying to figure out how they are going to pay the bills if they lose their job. That's the reality.

One last thing, who's going to do the shooting. Are you?
That has proven to be in very short supply
