Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

Almost certainly it was just the flu or a cold.

We only saw deaths this month, so I find it unlikely that people had this 3months ago.

I myself am only just getting over a cough Ive had for what seems like 6 weeks.
It is possible that some were classed as due to seasonal flu/pneumonia, especially in elderly, but still you’d think it would have been noticed if there were large spikes.

Well that's what my mate says. He's not saying he's had it, but he had all the symptoms. He's healthy and no asthma or anything.

Like I've said, he doesn't think he's had it or at least isn't assuming that's the case. He just says - like a lot of people - that he really did have something bad this year/over Xmas.

The other thing is that the first British person who contracted it in Wuhan – I'm pretty sure they said they'd had it in November, mate.

Reed said he first felt sick in November, with symptoms resembling a common cold. It quickly escalated though, and his condition deteriorated into symptoms similar to the flu.
Because he was one of the first cases, Reed said little was done in terms of treatment because doctors just couldn't identify it.
He said: "I didn't know what it was. Doctors didn't know what it was. The problem with the coronavirus is you get better before you get worse.

Fwiw (Reddit anecdote):
Update from civil service mates: New requests for Universal Credit are now at 300 per second

Seems high to me,but people have been complaining about various parts of the system for a week or so, having to go through the process several times, sometimes getting locked out at I'd verification stage. I personally don't have a clue about it,but it doesn't appear to be robust or efficient.

300 per second is a million an hour.
No.

The reaction is understandable.

People get frightened, and then they get angry and want to lash out and the conspiracy theories abound. The start acting aggressively in herd, and it can get ugly really quick.

The last 50 pages of this thread have been absolutely depressing to me to read. Recriminations are already flying all over the place. Ordinarily I'd be disgusted, but these are unordinary times, and so I cut a lot of slack.

It's OK to be scared. But if you lose your humanity then the virus has already won.

I agree.

I get the reactions, I do.

I'm just talking about the decisions from the top - across the globe - here. They just don't sit right with me (and I honestly don't know why).

I get that the lockdown measures are the best way to deal with it - now that it's here and spreading. Totally.

But that wasn't always the case and I don't just buy a 'lack of preparation' when this thing has been about for months.

I really do feel sorry for these people, but come on, had they been paying any attention to the news at all, like I had been, they'd have returned home at least two weeks ago. I thought that a mate of mine was pushing it fine when he returned to the Netherlands from Cambodia last week.

Take responsibility, don't expect to be dug out by the government, even if you are having a great time.

Are you happy with that?. I think I would be.

Somebody mentioned that it wouldn't help the people who have recently gone self employed, and there will always be exceptions whatever the govt do. But they must have a base to work from and this seems as good as any.

What people need to take into account is that this has never happened to us before. Mistakes are being made but they are trying to sort this out. I wish people would understand that.

Yes I'm very happy (in the circumstances) if it's the case.

It's a bit confusing for me as I have only actually been full-time freelancing for a year. So I guess in that case I can only average out my earnings over the last year?

If that's the case then it is covering me. Not covering my losses altogether but I don't expect that, but definitely covering me.

I don't want to be on it at all, like, but unfortunately every sporting event for the foreseeable is gone and my main three sources of income this summer were gonna be Euros, Glasto (had a few reviews/interviews lined up) and Olympics. Now all gone. So I do need the money.

Still looking for as much work as poss and have worked today (albeit not in sports reporting).

It's 2020 mate.

What does that even mean? ;)

Tell you what mate I don't think I've seen a post from you where you're not referencing a South East Asian country! lol

An Arizona man has died and his wife is in a critical condition after both ingested a form of chloroquine in an apparent effort to guard against Covid-19.

The drug has been touted by President Donald Trump as a possible treatment for the virus.

It is also an additive commonly used to clean fish tanks.

Shortly after ingestion, the couple fell ill, said Arizona-based hospital system Banner Health.

The couple were both in their 60s.

The woman told NBC News she had seen a televised briefing in which Mr Trump discussed the potential benefits of chloroquine as a treatment Covid-19.

We may have only had deaths this month from corona as there's only been a test recently, but people have been dying all winter and it was put down to flu or pneumonia, maybe some of these were corona.
