The completely lackadaisical initial reaction no doubt condemned many to an early death. Unbelievable how slowly it was taken seriously despite clear evidence of the absolute catastrophe hitting Italy and China.
Right China I get, but why did it pop up in Italy and at the same time also, iirc, Iran.

The correct answer to that question can maybe explain a lot

It's several things. Not closing ports early enough. Johnson parading around making a joke about things (including japing about shaking hands). Utterly inadequate scenario planning and preparation (which went back as far as Hunt and Burnham under labour TBF). Totally caught other hop and with no genuinely capable leadership in place imho.

I think you're missing thrust of my question -
Forget Johnson and all the other bells in the UK
Why...after it emerged in China...did it 'start next' in Italy and Iran?
2 places, especially Iran, that are not noted for inter population exchanges with China.

First 2 recorded cases in Italy.

Well found mate

Maybe not the government, but there were many healthcare professionals not associated with the government that were providing good information.
There were also many healthcare professionals who were silenced and accused of all sorts, simply for questioning or having a different view to the official gov narrative.

Editing that post - don't know why I'm getting involved in this again.

I'm very (pleasantly) surprised at how the world has managed to get back to normal, I'll leave it at that!
Also thinking positively, the way in which many now work in the UK has changed for the better, be it remote or hybrid.

And most EU countries are now offering a Digital Nomad Visa, so there's also the chance to escape the UK post Brexit.
