Posted the above having only read half of the article. Having read it now fully I was wrong. China clearly more to blame than the US. The article is quite frightening. Only a matter of time before the next pandemic

Does the article mention that the lab had two previous safety breaches or violations by the regulator?

I remember being told about all this in the summer of 2021.

I remember being told about all this in the summer of 2021.

No it just mentions that they have been doing a lot of reckless and dangerous testing there for the best part of a decade. Up until around 2016 there was a British and an American scientist heavily involved in experiments, but then the Chinese starting concealing what they were doing and their military got more involved.

It did also mention that safety/hygiene in the lab was quite lax.

Very interesting article. I was skeptical of the lab leak hypothesis because lots of the explanations at the time were more supported by the available data relative to "it was made in the lab and released" (e.g., the viral sequence has bat origins, which suggests a zoonotic transfer not a lab-based one). But if it's true what the US State Dept folks say, then the Chinese were deliberately covering up evidence and/or withholding information such as serial passaging from the NIH project reports. It also seems that Daszak must have given the lab a copy of his rejected DARPA grant.
