Could be argued that we've let it rip too and dont really test, so are permanently at risk of new variants, but China would benefit from letting a bad variant spread here which I think is why places are getting worried and putting measures in place.

they don't have a political issue in China by letting all the death happen at once, whereas we'd have to go into lockdown. Which would leave China in a very strong position.

But without effectively banning all travel, any new variant China has will end up everywhere via 3rd countries so testing arrivals in a few countries makes no real difference
