Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

Been saying this for ages..

Some years we have 40,000 flu deaths and no one bats an eye lid!!

This article does pose some questions about historical 'flu's'.. Were they Corona viruses like we have now?

It is always worth saying that thousands of people die every single day and there has never been anyone arsed about that.

It's not covid deaths generally but to what relation to the other deaths. Going back to the start of the pandemic and last winter, very easy argument to say the numbers were at a point where we had to act. Once the numbers are at a level where they aren't even noticeable in comparison to every other death then it changes again.

Ironically how many old people die of old people reasons every day? But just one reason is headlined and made to be more important than any other. By August 2020 , 25% of covid deaths were dementia patients also.

The longer you continue to publish the numbers of only one way to die when there is countless out there, people will still feel like it's April 2020. Even when just as many people are dying for other reasons

The key word you left out there was “unnecessarily”.

We do need to prevent deaths that are preventable by the way.

We do our best, but unfortunately death isnt preventable. It can be delayed, but it can also be accelerated.

Sometimes a body is just ready to go/cant survive. Whether that is Covid, Flu, excess fluids, resp failure, or a lifestyle choice. Low sodium levels can do for you, or at least, lead to a fatal condition.

That is true, but there is plenty of evidence to suggest a significant chunk of our flu deaths are preventable - for a start, we already prevent a lot just because of the vaccination campaigns every year.

Quite. Despite a flu shot, elderly vulnerable folk will die from it. Not a lot anyone can do about that.

Just because we can prevent deaths doesn't mean we should, speaking for myself, I'd rather die in my 80's from something preventable than at 100 of something not preventable that had me bed ridden for a few years with no quality of life and in pain..

My Dad has made that decision, or rather, he will soon. 86, splendid life, laid low with sommet that cant be mended, just treated every few weeks. He thankfully is of sound mind, so he can refuse the next intervention. He refused the uber risky surgery a few months back so he could say Bye to Nik, and he will do the same to make Mums life "easier" in her dotage.

My Granny is 90 in a few weeks, she's got dementia and likley wont be alive much longer.. years ago she signed a DNR and isn't afraid of dying, she told my mother that, she believes that she will go to a better place and finally get to see Grandad again.
I know she wouldn't have ever wanted to end up like she currently is but so far theres been nothing done to keep her alive and given what we know about how she felt when sound of mind it makes it easier for my Uncle and Mother to make the decision.

Without getting all soppy, tell her she will.

I wont go into detail, but Nik said she would would prove I was wrong about that stuff, and my god, didnt she just. @LinekersLegs will (again) confirm.
She's not coherent any more, she was told that she would, when she said it..

The doctor at the home has said that they will make her as comfortable as possible for the next few weeks.. she can't eat and is sleeping most of the time. I haven't seen her since 2019, (she's in England I'm in Ireland so travel was virtually impossible) not sure I want to now, my last memory of her is playing Dinosaurs with my then 3 year old, that's a nice memory not sure I want it changed to her asleep in a bed knowing she's never getting up.

Keep that memory would be my suggestion mate. I never saw Nik in the chapel of rest, (didnt want to remember her that way), same with Dad in hospital now.

That said, when I asked him if I could visit, he said "Lad, the last person you visited in Hospital died, so leave it to your Mum".

Humour is always with us.

Is spending the equivalent of a pint or two of beer too much to keep you alive?

With a national health service all vaccinations should be free (so should dentistry etc but that's another matter). If the jabs result in reduced demand for the services in winter months it's a no brainer of a decision.

Many cannot afford (or just won't) pay for a flu jab. If it's free and easily accessible there will be a higher take up rate.
