Incidentally...

The ILC estimates that, in England, flu vaccination costs £203.5m a year at the current rates of coverage. Costs would rise to £258.2m a year if coverage reached 75 per cent, but vaccination saves £0.8m-£2.7m in GP costs, £1.9m-£44.4m in hospital costs and £12.2m-£28.9m in sick leave. The savings associated with avoiding premature death range from £89.2m-£269.7m; the cost per death averted is £50,610.

My Dad has made that decision, or rather, he will soon. 86, splendid life, laid low with sommet that cant be mended, just treated every few weeks. He thankfully is of sound mind, so he can refuse the next intervention. He refused the uber risky surgery a few months back so he could say Bye to Nik, and he will do the same to make Mums life "easier" in her dotage.
Roydo, please accept my deepest sympathies. My Dad died in 2008 at 88 and my mother last February at almost 94. I miss them so much in spite of trying to justify it by their longevity.

Losing a loving parent is something that has hit me like a sack of cement in recent years and this Christmas without my Mum.. Still feel awful every morning.

Everton not helping mind you!

Sad that.

I am fully reconciled to the inevitable, probs cos what I went through the last two years. If Covid has any positives, (sic), its that many of us have had to face upto, and discuss, the ultimate question. Even though Nik, nor Dad were/are Covid related, I have never felt closer to friends and family in discussing either of them.

I am sure I am far from unique in that.

Startling case figures from Europe : France 464,769, Italy, 228,179.
Mate more than 5.5m have died worldwide from this ...my wife and daughter, both nurses, go to work every day covered in PPE.

Thank God, so far none of my family has gone down with this. My sister got it and recovered fine DG before Christmas.

This is a pandemic which I believe will have more variants. We really need to be careful.

Little bit of an odd one this, we may all have covid in this house but it's not been indicated through conventional means.

Daughter had a temp yesterday so we kept her off school and sent her back in today as she was back to normal.

Son said this morning he had a sore throat so we sent him on his way to school with a throat sweet.

I'm sneezing today.

Wife has been extremely tired recently.

We are only testing ourselves because we had our 4 month niece stay over the weekend and she has tested positive after a temperature.

So a whole range of symptoms if we do indeed finally have it. Noone is seriously ill , if theae tests all come back negative then I genuinely believe at this point o will never catch covid ?

My hospital has surpassed it's previous record COVID census. Had 249 yesterday, now at 278. Previous high mark was 255 in January of 2021 (delta surge). The good news is that the ICU/Vent numbers still remain low compared to previous surges.

Less lung involvement for omicron, vaccines and learning how to manage the disease helping keep those serious case numbers low.

Six days later....
Still comparatively lower percentage of people with COVID are requiring ICU/vent, however the actual numbers needing ICU/vent (serious illness) are now the same as the delta wave given the sheer number of infected patients.

This is why vaccines and masks still matter
