Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

Well unless they change the rules associated around the isolation to match the (lower) severity of the strain (if it does prove to be lower).

Like I said, you wouldn’t have staff previously isolating for a cold. so it’s why the real-world data is so important. If - and if isn’t proven yet obviously as it’s a week or so away at least - Omicron does prove to be less severe, and there’s not a sharp rise in hospitalisations etc, then surely we need to look at reducing the extremity of the restrictions/responses?

I don’t mean stuff like masks. I mean for example isolation periods. Can they be 5 days? Can it be that key workers just get a pcr to clear and have to follow up with daily tests?

If the strain is less severe, then it makes no sense to have responses that match the seriousness of previous strains. So yes it is a wait and see on that severity, but surely that has to be the answer

In theory yes... But as there's a time delay between infections, hospitalisations and deaths it could be difficult to change the rules when you would need it.

Infections will be going through the roof before they know any reduced severity for certain I'd guess

yeah that's the issue

However, the lag shouldn't be more than two weeks between the start of the sharp rise in cases and hospitilisations.

The infections are already going through the week and are estimated to be at least twice the number of confirmed cases.

Which is why I point to the Denmark data. They appear to have started their Omicron wave around about December 5 but they were definitely in it by the 10. They have had no rise in hospitilisations yet, though obviously a few more days' data is needed. Likewise, London has been in the grip of Omicron for a week now, so we should start to see any impact on hospitilisations within the next week.

Sad thing is, I fear the uncertainty and fear people have has already killed off a lot of the hospitality trade.

I've been working this past weekend and as I've been ill I wouldn't be off out anyway, but on the walks I've been on I've noticed two of the locals round mine, which would be packed at this time last year, were completely dead on Saturday.

Even last week, I went out in Leeds for a meal and the city centre was so quiet. Loads of stores empty now too - I haven't been in in a while so I hadn't seen it.

He won’t want to see himself as ‘cancelling Christmas’ and no point in doing it when families are still together on Boxing Day . 27th means he can address the nation on a bank holiday .

Nothing but cowardice, reckon it will be the same just with advisory not to.mix, then once festivities are done bring in the legal measures.
We have a big family Christmas will go ahead within the law...
Mainly because it's all paid for (accommodation). We will do LFTs and a act accordingly, got to do it daily now myself while at work.

Surely they'll announce a lockdown with a bit of notice. Normally it's about 5 days isn't it?

I think they'll announce it on the 23rd or 24th with it starting on the 27th or 28th?

I think it’s less fear and more ‘I don’t want to get covid just in time for Christmas and potentially cancel those plans’.

Same around by me mate, pubs, restaurants are empty.

From talking to people, they aren’t that worried about catching it, it’s the fact that if they do, that’s their Christmas buggered.

So, they’re avoiding going out until Christmas is over.

The upside may be, that hospitality ( if open ) may have a busier than normal period, once Christmas is over.

Yes... so fear of that. That's what I meant :)

Still, doesn't make it any easier mate.

My dad passed the pub down ours on Saturday night and it should have been heaving, had like 4/5 tables full that he could see he said.

Yeah that's what I meant, should have been clear @mill - the fear of catching it and cancelling Xmas

I actually think it'll be even worse after Xmas/NY given the rise in cases. A lot of places might actually want to be shut, if there is the right funding there. If they leave them in this perpetual state of uncertainty, then Jan/Feb will kill them off, no doubt about it.

Absolutely booming round my area this weekend (and pretty much all weekends since Summer). Generally people seem to give less of a crap about following the government warnings up here though.
