I don't get why there would be a rule of 6 outside with vaccines. I get 1000's of people, but not 10 people
Omicron has the same vaccine breakthrough rate as Delta but is doubling every 2 days. 1 case equals about 10k after 14 days with unrestricted community infection.

Its just the sheer number of infectious people that will be the problem. Cases will hit 200,000+ per day after xmas.

I guess rules are back where they were regardless of vaccines.

There's arguably more of a reason to have harsh restrictions before and over Christmas this year (as in, now).than there was last year. But we won't, because Boris Johnson wants to remain Prime Minister

Depending on the estimates used for vaccine effectiveness against symptomatic infection from the Delta variant, this translates into vaccine effectiveness estimates against symptomatic Omicron infection of between 0% and 20% after two doses, and between 55% and 80% after a booster dose. Similar estimates were obtained using genotype data, albeit with greater uncertainty.

How can 2 doses of a vaccine protect only up to 20% but the booster takes you up to 80%?

Prof Neil Ferguson from Imperial College London said: “This study provides further evidence of the very substantial extent to which Omicron can evade prior immunity given by both infection or vaccination. This level of immune evasion means that Omicron poses a major, imminent threat to public health.”

I thought we already new it was more contagious than previous variants but a lot weaker?
If hospital admissions or deaths dont rise significantly then this is good news and not a major threat.

If true, I feel that the complacency by many who've had the virus, including myself, will play a part in the surge. Thankfully, I've had my booster.

I suspect the worry is the sheer number of people who'll be contracting the virus in a short period of time, including those who've been previously infected.

As I mentioned a few days ago, 1% of 10,000,000 is 10x larger than 1% of 1,000,000 as so on, so it'll be interesting to watch hospitalisation rates etc.

In terms of why does the booster help, I haven't got a clue; as a layman, I was thinking it might be due to a recent boost to the immune system to fight it?

It does feel a bit like people are assuming the medical experts just make stuff up for the shits and giggles.
I think the age of social media may play a part in this - far too many 'experts' on TickTock or what not; god, you could easily say the same on here.

I'm not a Dr, a virologist, microbiologist or an expert in any other suitable field, so if so many people in those fields say they're concerned I'm going to listen.

I've previously mentioned in here (months if not over a year ago) that I have a friend at the LSTM. She's worried about Omicron, which adds weight to it all.

Bit nuts isn't it. This fan group thing is the same, like having one of us schmucks on the board is going to make the club better run.

Aye. That doesn't mean every board member of doctor is going to make the correct analysis or decisions, but let's go by strength in numbers.

I can't see the majority openly and willingly ignoring their Hippocratic Oath to make stuff up. Some will say it's embellishment or being overly concerned.

But again, I can't see such rational folk doing this as a majority.

That's it. I don't expect experts to be perfect or infallible, but just that they're a lot better than non-experts.
