Going on what Boris said today.

"Sadly, yes, Omicron is producing hospitalisations and sadly at least one patient has been confirmed to have died with Omicron," he said.

"So I think the idea that this is somehow a milder version of the virus, I think that's something we need to set on one side and just recognise the sheer pace at which it accelerates through the population. So the best thing we can do is all get our boosters

Delta has and is killing people and causing hospitalisations as well.

So why are we shining a spotlight on the new variant that has 5000 cases in the UK , by using terminology and sentences that are directly applicable to the other variant we already had? Like it's a new thing that the new one is causing this?

The scientists in South Africa seem to think it is milder, so not sure why they aren't being listened to
I've added more to that post man!

But you are right , this country is acting in despite of the information we have rather than with it. That's not meaning a business as usual approach but the worst scenario model of 75 thousand deaths for example is comparing this variant to when 'alpha' was spreading.

So we are just dismissing 120 million vaccinations and counting (2 X 50 plus 20 booster) , antibodies developed naturally and around 70% difference in vaccinated population. Just those factors.....?

Aside from a few areas, where it's still to be determined, the dominant strain is delta.

Delta will be forgotten in 1 weeks time. The new strain is on another level.

20% cases in one school at once definitely seems like the new variant.

The worry for me are venues like nightclubs, 1 individual with the highly contagious variant could infect 100+ people in the time it takes to have 2 or 3 pints.

I think the pressure will grow for a lockdown.
Kinda think though it might be a backdoor one if it does happen.
Close the schools again, so parents have to stay home, social distancing, lock down the vulnerable etc.

I really hope it doesn't happen. We have done enough damage to the economy and people mental health already, and we still have no proof this variant is causing deaths.

They’d have to bring back furlough again and I’d be amazed if they do.

It doesn't really. It just sounds fairly common.

However, your point about Omicron variant taking hold is absolutely right.

I've never heard of a single class having more than around 5 kids off with COVID at once. 20% of a one form entry primary for example is 42 out of 210 kids. That is not common at all, it's a very large outbreak.
