Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

Died WITH the variant, or died FROM the variant? Two very different things.

Messaging on these kinds of things needs to be better. Just like how some people still think that someone testing positive for COVID equals their vaccine not working. That was never true, but poor messaging has led to a lot of people thinking it is.

I don't support lockdowns and if that's all a so called expert can suggest, then they aren't much of an expert. They have been way out on their predictions far too often so it's natural people are sceptical.

I am in the vast majority of people in this country. Pro-vaccine but anti-lockdown. Be nice if the media and government could start representing us properly and stop pandering to the extremes on both sides of the argument; i.e. lockdown fanatics or anti vaxxers.

That has been my point all along though - there are alternatives to lockdowns or even to endless vaccination campaigns, and the government after nearly two years of failure should really be doing them.

Yet when anyone suggests them it’s “you’re in favour of lockdowns!” despite them making lockdowns less likely to be needed.

Out of interest - how would you implement anything with cases as high as they are now? Other than a lockdown I can't see anything working from our current position. It would have to be extremely strict too everything closed including schools, construction sites etc with huge fines for non compliance.

Doing anything now is going to be really difficult, but the idea is to avoid ever getting in this situation.

Everywhere in Europe is in the same position though. This variant is what 5 or 6x as transmissible as the original strain? What worked in March 2020 might not work now.

It has a better chance of working than doing nothing, or for that matter mandatory vaccination by itself does.

I think a lockdown is pointless. Surely we must have learned form the last ones. They don't work, and people are not going to give up seeing family at Xmas again.
For something this transmissible, we would need to lock down everything. Not going to happen. So why bother.

They did work, at least in terms of reducing cases, hospitalisations and deaths to levels that could have then been managed.

The problem has come because this government have (twice) failed to put in place something to allow management of this virus to take place, with the results we all saw last Christmas and now are being reminded of again now. Does anyone expect them to learn from this?

Did they reduce cases?
Pretty sure everytime we came out of one. Cases sky rocketed. We just delayed the inevitable.
The only way you ever know is by having tangible evidence to compare it to. As it was the first time doing it, we don't actually know if lockdown made a difference. Or as mentioned. Just delayed.
Sitting here now. I can't think of a single family !ember or person I work with, who didn't have the Rona at some point. Most 2 times, that they know of.
Plus we never really locked down, did we?
Still got close to people in supermarkets, brushed last people in car parks.
Came across thousands of dog walkers on their '1 hour" exercise.
Handled the same products in supermarkets.
Then when you add in playing and handling your masks to the point they became pointless. You can easily ask the question, was a lockdown actually any use.

Yes, they did. When we came out of both lockdowns we were at high 000s / low 0000s cases across the entire UK.
