The SA population is also many years younger than ours on average, its not just vaccination status that counts here.

True but the vast majority of people over 60 in the UK have had three doses which should massively reduce issues in that age group. A triple vaxxed 80 year old has a similar death rate to an unvaccinated 50 year old.

That’s concerning….

* Reads actual article….

“It is not clear if those people who are in hospital with Omicron are there because of the virus or for other reasons.”

Oh.
BBC seems to have two functions nowadays - Project fear scaremongering and fluffing the RS.
About time the license fee was scrapped in my opinion.

Amazing what people are willing to protest and what people are willing to ignore solely on the basis that it inconveniences them in anyway

I wouldn’t mind so much but many of them are just picking a side in a debate thats been pushed on everyone by the usual suspects in politics, professional commentary and the media, despite it being completely artificial - this lockdowns vs freedom nonsense.

This is a global crisis with very real consequences already delivered for hundreds of thousands of people here, those who’ve died, been seriously ill and their families. It’s not made up, and the virus doesn’t give a sh*t whether someone believes in it or not.

The debate should be how do we competently deal with this, not arguing between two extremes that are both wrong. However we end up back there again, almost every day now.

Indeed, though there has been plenty of nuanced stuff from posters wanting be informed as well as having an opinion, there is some weird rhetoric as well suggesting that even accepting we may as a populace have to develop new ways of going about our day to day is some kind of surrender to a bourgeois elite. Going against your moral duty as a warrior of free speech in the ongoing warfare opposing the evil scientists who have found power in their blue tick twitter accounts. I didn't see most of these lads around when we had dangerous ill informed subliminally racist headlines driving brexit, and I'm sure they failed to take up arms to prevent apartheid in gaza as it doesn't have quite the same oppressive overtones as putting a mask on on a 5 minute tube journey.

If there is one thing I've learned during the pandemic, in part due to be massively wrong at the start and also in part due to having so much time on my hands in that first lockdown, is that we hold far too many opinions that become dogma to us without having any really knowledge of the subject. I've seen the metaphor made by good posters that these issues are treated like football matches in that you choose a side to support and a side to oppose and that never changes. The reality is that 'doing your own research' actually requires years of dedicated study, and the rest of us are just waiting to be educated.

A little less rogan and a little more laurence krauss (or similiar on both) would go a long way in society

Yeah where I disagree is that I'll just carry on wearing the mask where I was (mostly) anyway; supermarket, going to the gym, on the train etc, but I was already doing that so it's not a massive issue for me. But I do get your point.

The lockdown probably will come and it's ludicrous, as are the draconian measures all across different countries.
I’m sorry but ???????

Oh.
If governments can enact emergency laws to keep people within 5km from home then surely they can stop the utter tripe reporting that's going on with this pandemic..

:(

This brief examines how deaths from COVID-19 rank among other leading causes of death in the U.S. We find that COVID-19 was the third leading cause of death in November 2021. We also find that in October, COVID-19 was the number 1 cause of death for people age 45-54 and in the top 7 leading causes of death for other age groups, aside from infants.
