That was a reply to what @Tigger said. We can all minimise this to “it’s only 2%” or whatever but that’s still a huge number of people.
It is but to what extent is the data skewed now?

It's probably been said many times before but a covid patient with a broken leg is the same as a covid patient having severe respiratory issues. That figure needs to be filtered at this point to give a much better understanding of the way covid is acting within a vaccinated society. There is a massive disproportion between tested positive and deaths/ hospitalisations and from what little I do know, the figure has increased from July to now, but not to a great extent.

I've said it many times before but the focus on numbers without context doesn't tell us anything. It's that lack of context that still sees people rolling out and saying things like

There are people in hospital who have tested positive for the new Omicron Covid strain, the education secretary has confirmed.

Nadhim Zahawi has not said whether the infection was the primary cause of the reason for hospitalisation or what the vaccination status of the patients were.

Warning that Omicron ‘will be the dominant variant in the UK and in the world’, the minister said even if the strain turns out to be milder, it could result in tens of thousands of hospitalisations.

Not one part of that has any relevance to anything , nor does it tell the public about covid in any way. But it's still said and reported much bigger than it probably is. All for a reason!

See the difference in lack of context, rolled out a random minister to say ohmicron patients are in hospital , but doesn't say whether that is the reason they went into hospital. It's pure manipulation of data to suit a purpose , which will Stoke the fear of covid even more at a time when it is blatently manipulation of the public now.

We need to get strict on covid passports. Enforce them and let the rest of us get on with our lives the best we can. But more than happy with mask wearing and minor changes to hospitality if combined with the passport if necessary.

These anti vaxxers will ruin it for the rest of us when they ultimately end up in A&E.

That almost felt true with the initial wave of the virus in 2020, but Delta was different, at least across the American south this past summer. Lots of young and otherwise healthy (but unvaccinated) people bet on their immune system and lost.
But still a small minority, my post was in response to the media declaring the vast majority have effectively no protection from Omricon, which is absolute tripe as it's only a minority, an important minority of course as every life is, but more scaremongering for what appears a mild variant.

Chise has become my favourite covid twitter account. One of the few voices that is not wildly scaremongering.

There will always be a degree of uncertainty with the data and that's always factored in. The amount of people who end up in hospital, or any other injury, who also coincidently have covid will be a tiny proportion.

I guarantee 50% of hospitality sector business's will closed down within 12 months, its not sustainable, also there will be many many vaccinated people who will refuse to go to places that require vaccine passports.

Lets say you have a 100 people that got to your café each day now but after the vaccine passports are introduced you only start getting 70 people a day because the other 30 refuse to enter or aren't vaccinated, how long do you think the business will last for?

Actually, it's 70% in South Africa of people with the new Omricon variant.

70%, on the initial count, of people in hospitals with a positive COVID test for Omricon were 'incidental' admissions - i.e. they came in of another complaint and tested positive while there.

How long will the business last for if there's another lockdown?

So they're actually gathering that data and it's publicly available. We should be doing the same then.

Yes and yes

Edit: Btw that's not to say those people couldn't then get very ill from COVID, obviously. Omicron is so prevalent in South Africa (and will be here) that it's no surprise the cases are so high. But, it doesn't make most people very ill, so people probably aren't likely to know they have it for sure unless they get tested

Not true , when all patients are recorded the same way, there is no way of knowing. All patients are put on the same wards whether they are in for covid or despite it. I think there has been plenty I've seen, mostly in here , showing that much less covid hospitalisations but can't remember what they specifically said.

Think of it this way, if we are getting 40/50 thousand cases a day on average, wouldn't that mean out of the 50 million vaccinated , and the million of reasons you can go into hospital , they would cross at some point and positive patients end up in hospital for a different reason? Over a million positive tests a month, given the difference between positive and hospitalisation already, out of those million others who don't have issues , they can get sick/hurt for different reasons.

But a positive test is recorded the same. So I'm triple vaccinated, if I fell down the stairs now and ended up in hospital, I would be an admission in the data if I was positive, despite not being there for that reason.

Yes, but it really annoys me how this context argument is deployed by people who often have contexts of their own.

I mean yes, we know people might go into hospital with something else and be found to have COVID once they are there. That doesn’t invalidate those statistics though - there’s still an impact on the hospital, often on the person as well and they can still die or be placed on a vent from COVID rather than what they went in for.

Everything these people seem to spout (and in many cases have spouted for nearly two years now) is aimed at minimising this disease, the impact it’s having and will continue to have. It’s this attitude that’s keeping us in the mire.

This was why I was baffled and frankly wondering what the hell was going on the other day .
