Because they need to be able to point to the boosters as the reason it hasn't been too bad, so they can continue pushing them for future doses. They've ordered enough to jab everyone a stupid amount of times and I expect they intend to use them.
My pessimistic prediction is that by February we'll be told the Omicron wave was held back by our World beating booster campaigns, hence the vaccines must become mandatory every x amount of months apart to ensure we stay free. And we'll never know if it was truly mild because we don't listen to scientists or use data from places like South Africa.
If it turned out Scotlands 90% next week doesn't lead to a bad hospital situation, that doesn't help pfizer's share prices...

This was always going to be the likely consequence of only relying on vaccines to get back to normal though, that we’d have to be protected by vaccination campaigns until the threat went away.
I don’t think it is the UK that is the only country saying it. Denmark, who also have a good sequencing system, have detected a similar % of Omicron in their community and have implemented measures.

The ~2% hospitalization rate is for Delta, there is no certainty what the rate is for Omicron.
The concern is presumably that, even if the rate is less for it vs Delta you still get a NHS overload because of higher transmission.
For example England population ~60million. Assume 10% get Omicron over the rest of Dec ie 6 million cases. Assume Omicron ends up with much less hospitalization eg 0.5% of cases versus 2% for Delta. That still ends up with ~30k worth of people ending up needing beds.
They are also presumably taking into account NHSstaffing levels - a Malaga hospital had 70 staff infected at a Christmas party. None as far as I know have serious symptoms but all won’t be able to work for several days due to fears of infecting their patients.

I'm not aware of any other country reaction to the variant to be fair. Only the viewpoints from different ones shared on here.
To be blunt then, isn't that playing politics with people's lives? The exact thing that conspiracy theorists have accused the country of doing?
There is one thing to act accordingly to the data , another to act differently to serve a purpose. We already know these restrictions announced are political rather than science based. If the government are restricting lives simply to make people have boosters or to push through mandatory vaccinations then that is the point where the country will just not comply in numbers far bigger than they do now.
Iirc SA was using doubling time somewhere in the 3 days range, Scotland modelling much shorter “Based on data to 6th December, we can estimate a doubling time for Scotland of between 2.18 - 2.66 days using S-gene target failure as a proxy for Omicron cases.”
Haven’t seen an explanation for any difference but seasonal factors (South African summer) would be my best guess.
Im neither here nor there with all this any more. I dont care who is or isnt vaccinated.
i have heard all kinds of conspiracies from "theres glass in the vaccine causing the veins to cut" & "theres graphene in the vaccine and you get topped up, once we are all topped up, they will turn 5g on and turn us to pulp"
This however is the craziest one, these politicians dont give a hoot about us, but some people believe they are.

I know many won't agree with my conspiracy theory above but we've seen how corrupt they are, and we've seen how certain company's share prices skyrocket when further doses are discussed.
It's less of a conspiracy about control or 5g or whatever, and simply about cold hard cash. If the access is there, the money is there and the evident level of corruption is there, why wouldn't certain companies offer...incentives for their product to be used more often/mandated? Its simple business.
They've seen a chance at their product being mandated every few months worldwide, why wouldn't they push for it hard? These people exist in a completely different world to us both in terms of morals and ambition
