Hard to say exactly because you can’t see the actual itemized parts, just dates. That said, literally no extortionate medical bill in the US has the capacity to surprise me.
Yeah that’s why I asked. Have no doubt there are medical bills of that level in the US. Just wondering whether it might sound right in this instance as there isn’t any information in the picture really.

Those zeros on the right suggest to me no insurance payments have been applied. You NEVER want to pay a medical bill until you reconcile it with the EOB from the insurer.
Forgive my ignorance but what is EOB? Also, the column on the left with the dates. Is 08/26 a date or a reference code? If it’s a date that’s a lot longer than two weeks

I know medical bills in the US are insane but this seems on another level. Does this figure sound about right @RAFUH @LinekersLegs or any other of our American blues?

Before insurance discounts were applied I had a bill for ~100k for a relatively simple operation where I was in for about 36 hours so doesn’t seem outlandish as the top-line figure for 2 weeks of high level care.

After medical insurance benefits kicked in though mine was reduced to ~2k out of pocket. What they will end up owing will depend a lot on what insurance they have.

Just as well it wasn’t a heart operation mind, that 100k did a number on my blood pressure for a bit!

It is crazy. A guy I know was working on a building site and was basically crushed by a truck. He was lucky as he was in Denver and they apparently have one of the best spinal units in the World so he survived and can also still walk. Thankfully for him he was wearing every bit of safety equipment and following every rule. His bills were in the millions and if he had been doing one thing wrong he’d have been liable for the payments as the insurance company tried to squirm out of paying any way they could. Sorry, this is probably too off topic but I’ve written it now haha

I keep noticing how all the unhealthy overweight people in the media who probably can't run for more than ten minutes or lift anything heavier than a small cat also seem to be the ones insisting healthy people who control their weight & health through good food, will power & exercise HAVE to take an injection to keep THEM healthy.

Case in point: Andrew Neil

Sorry. Explanation of Benefits.

It’s the insurer explaining what the facility billed, what the approved* price is, what the insurer paid and what you owe to the facility.

*approved price - when a hospital/clinic contracts with an insurance they agree to a set price for a procedure, room, meds, etc.
A hospital may bill $500 per day for a room, but the contracted price with an insurer may be $400

As for the dates….2 weeks in ICU. The overall admission was likely much longer.

EOB is explanation of benefits. US healthcare comes with an avalanche of paperwork to keep track of.

And yes those look like dates so appears much longer than 2 weeks of care.

My wife started work as a Health Care Assistant a few weeks ago in our local hospital, having spent her entire working life in child care. She mentioned last week that they were seeing an increase in patients on her ward with Covid. So to find out more, and to maybe add something to this debate, I questioned her this evening on what the general feeling was amongst the other healthcare professionals etc. on the current situation. She said, and I quote:

“No idea really, all I do know is that there was a woman on my bay today who is a recovering alcoholic and last night the nurse gave her laxatives as her medication was giving her constipation, and I swear to God, she must have shiit the bed about 10 times today FFS”.

Now I know this doesn’t really add anything of importance to this thread, but I thought I’d share it….

I'd have needed to have been turfed out of hospital after about 2 hours Jimi and would have been asking the receptionist at the end of her shift to make me a makeshift bed in the carpark and look after me.

Insane amounts of money.

Mate, I’d still be there now working in the canteen trying to pay it off.

They nearly had to get me a defibrillator when I got the bill.
