It has killed a few people in South Africa I believe but the number is unclear. They have had an estimated over 100,000 cases so the death ratio at the moment is incredibly low. It probably will be a bit higher in a couple of weeks.
But don’t they also have <20% of their population vaxxed at this point? I don’t know how you even begin to extrapolate the effects out onto a population of mostly double vaxxed, and many triple vaxxed people.

The impact on vaccinated people there so far is extremely small. They're basing these measures on cases hitting hundreds of thousands per day which probably won't happen as there's a limit on how high cases can realistically get.

By and large, that’s what the US has done at this point. Trouble is, our first 18 months fighting this thing were such a shambles that no European country probably wants to cast their gaze across the Atlantic right now and say, “They’re really nailing it, let’s follow their lead.”
Aye, Covid being the 2nd highest cause of US death this September above cancer and many hospitals across the country being unable to treat emergency patients is going to be a tad off-putting for most.

I don’t know that there is a limit necessarily on how high the cases can get, but it has to be close to the upper limit of the damage it can do unless this or some future variant completely evades the vaccines. Just too many people have some level of immunity at this point either through vaccine or a prior infection.

There is a limit as there's only a certain number of people. You also have to remember that the reported cases is far below the actual quantity due to testing limitations. That 100,000 in South Africa is probably well over 500,000 or more in reality as a large percentage won't be testing. The UK is similar, roughly about 1 in every 65 people in the UK test each day so you're catching a fraction of the positives.
