How do you enforce a lockdown?

I have no idea other than soldiers on the streets.

And even then there isn't enough to cover everywhere.

Look, I'm pretty sure even in a 'lockdown' here people will still be allowed to go out on a walk or a run or whatever. There's enough open space in places outside the major cities. I mean, that's the sensible approach.

And it's the one Johnson has tried to take today. But obviously it relies on people to use a bit of common sense.

Up until Thursday I was using the indoor gym that I go to. A small hotel gym which doesn't get very busy (it's why I go there). It was dead last week the three times I went. I'm missing it but can get by. When I went I was extra careful to clean everything down before and after use. Now I'll go on a run or a walk when it's likely I'm gonna avoid people. With the weather nice and the clocks going forward soon that's going to be easier too, plus I'm not at work in the day so can get out in the afternoon.

I just think that's a sensible approach and tbh it's the only thing that's gonna keep me sane if we're locked down for the next however many weeks.

I hope that common sense prevails and the idiots don't ruin it for the rest of us - there's no issue in going for a walk around the block on your own

I've got the feeling that they'll ask the police to enforce which is a joke - there isn't enough of them to deal with actual criminals - never mind Terry from number 38 that wanted to have a walk to the park

Oh, by the way, what happens when the already dangerously depleted prison services don't have enough fit and well prison officers to supervise the countries currently serving 80+ thousand UK prisoners, (a lot of whom will be dangerously ill as well) during a global pandemic?

I know the default response is normally 'The Army' - but they aren't immune from all this either.

They'll draft in cops, and any prisoner not infected will be kept in their cell the whole 24 hours.

Thing is mate. For a lot of people it is.
The end of a life, while tragic, isn't the end of the world. Roughly 500,000 people die in the UK each year. This isn't like the plague or small pox, the vast majority of people will be fine. It's not that I don't care about those that die from this I just think it's important to put it into context. The media have whipped up such a storm around this that I'm more fearful of the problems caused by the panic, than the virus itself.

Yep my dad is due to have his next year – just asked.

Again, is it not something which could be rolled out earlier though in a situation like this?

I mean I know there's enough strain now but back in Feb/late Jan could they not have said we're going to start rolling this out to people under that age bracket or especially those with 'underlying issues'. It won't stop COVID-19 but if it can contribute towards a stronger immune system then surely it could have helped.

Again not saying it's some mad conspiracy. Just seems another step which could feasibly have been taken.

It won’t give you a stronger immune system per se. It would help reduce the risk that you would develop a bacterial pneumonia on top of having COVID or flu or some other virus.
