This give up something to save something narrative is a load of utter nonsense. We can't keep going on like this with the most short term outlook.

People will be meeting their families this Christmas regardless of what the government or media say. They are totally out of touch with the feeling of the overwhelming majority of the population who are getting on with normal life.

The tragedy here is that sane expert advice has been politicised, by all the usual suspects in politics and the media, and now (as you say) many people are thinking they’ll just ignore it and get on with normal life.

Doing that could - if this goes wrong again - result in yet another tide of needless deaths, hospitalisations and the rest.

As a failure of government policy this is certainly right up there; it’s as if they’ve convinced huge swathes of the country to ignore fire alarms or red traffic lights.

They seem unwilling to enforce it to start with, but it's pointless because the rule should clearly be "anyone who has been in South Africa / the other countries in the past however many weeks" rather than directly from there

But then with it being in Belgium it's probably all pointless

Certainly they could speak to those people and do some testing, but as you say it’s probably going to arrive from a third country anyway.

It's too early for panic. That's what I'm saying. There is no need for stories about Christmas lockdowns, people aren't interested or listening anymore.

if bidness doesnt get don, the virus has already won

It's too late unfortunately. It's definitely already here in the UK. The media will be calling for a full lockdown in no time at all.

I suspect your probably right mate. But I think Western Europe has a chance of buying time if Nu proves to be another Delta.

There is much still we don’t know, it’s transmissibility, it’s lethality and it’s ability to break through vaccinations.

What we know so far is Nu has elements of every other varient, but also elements we haven’t seen before and has 50% more mutations than Delta. I think the clever play is caution here.

I’d rather be caught overreacting than go through another surge without warning.

Calls into question the protocols around travel, she was unvaccinated so presume she had a negative PCR to be allowed travel.

North Africa with no discernible link to Southern Africa, not good news!
Discovered in south africa but who knows how long it had been circulating and where before it was discovered?
