Important not to get carried away. Most of the hyperbolic reporting is coming from one scientist on twitter using emotive words. Let's just see what impact this variant has in the real world... its characteristics could vary in tonnes of ways, which doesn't necessarily equal more dangerous.

Coupled with virologist stating, that no matter what it is, they can tweak the vaccines to respond accordingly.

I mean more for the new variant - I was also thinking the after Christmas mixing overloading of hospitals initially

Controversial one, and this is from someone who loves christmas historically, is it really worth potentially losing months of the next year for?

If we lockdown either way we're losing months though?

The hospitals will definitely struggle this winter I agree, not really sure a lockdown would stop that though.

This give up something to save something narrative is a load of utter nonsense. We can't keep going on like this with the most short term outlook.

People will be meeting their families this Christmas regardless of what the government or media say. They are totally out of touch with the feeling of the overwhelming majority of the population who are getting on with normal life.

Much like governments all over the world... out of touch is an understatement.. it's so easy for them to go for a lockdown their pay doesn't take a hit, if those with the power to bring in a lockdown had to live with the consequences of a lockdown there wouldn't be lockdowns...

Well I think the initial lockdown was justified in the circumstances. But I totally agree with you on all future lockdowns. The people saying we need more restrictions after almost 2 years of this clearly have no idea about the impact it has had on people's wellbeing and financial situation.

It's certainly a bit of rich of them all to be coming out now telling people to reduce their contacts and activities again, after they've done precisely f all to prepare for the inevitable winter increases of infections. Just like last year.

That may not be enough to contain the surge in places like Germany and Austria, where most of these measures have been in force even as the disease has spread. In principle there is nothing wrong with demanding universal vaccination. In practice, however, it has enough drawbacks to give governments pause. A two-dose course will take weeks to become fully effective, even if anti-vaxxers comply. Austria is not requiring vaccination until February, when the wave is likely to be abating. In addition, if you believe that vaccination is a conspiracy by the state, compulsion only confirms your suspicions and attracts money and people to anti-vax campaigns. The policy could undermine faith in all vaccines for years to come. ■

Sorry for repeating myself but this government have learned nothing.
They seem unwilling to enforce it to start with, but it's pointless because the rule should clearly be "anyone who has been in South Africa / the other countries in the past however many weeks" rather than directly from there

But then with it being in Belgium it's probably all pointless
