Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

The only justification for lockdowns comes from the virus infecting that many people that it results in a much increased number of deaths (either from the disease directly or from the health service being overwhelmed).

I don’t want that, you don’t want that - no one wants that. The thing I am trying to point out to you and others is that what you are calling for makes that more likely to happen.

We're not calling for anything other than governments not deciding they can control every aspect of people's lives.

Measures are fine - simple solutions that don't limit freedom in any way.

Restrictions, forcing people into their homes, forcing people who have a cough to isolate, they are stupid.

Tsuabaki doesn't support lockdown either. They just support other restrictions to stop those lockdowns happening. I think that's the crucial point.

I support measures, not any restrictions at this point. I don't see having to wear a mask, if they bring that back in, as a restriction. I don't see working from home as a massive restriction. I do see shutting down businesses, not allowing people to go to certain places or not allowing unvaccinated people to mix with society as restrictions, though.

I don't have an issue with wearing a mask either thats fine but measures like in Ireland closing pubs at 12 etc that just seem a bit much at this point.

Wear a mask when it’s appropriate. WFH regularly if you can. Get vaccinated if you can.

Lockdowns are a last resort to protect health services.

My view is if you don’t do the simple things like mask wearing or vaccination, then you shouldn’t really complain about lockdowns.

But vaccines were promoted as a way of getting rid of masks, really. I remember that French ad for the vaccine campaign, a sexy woman taking her mask off and joining the crowd. (full of maskless people) Get your vaccine and return to normal she was heard saying.

So all that was a lie? We will keep wearing something over mouth and nose, forever?

What about if you’ve got naturally occurring antibodies from having the virus? I did an antibody test two weeks ago, I’ve still got them from when I had the virus in November 2020. Why isn’t this being considered a form of protection against the virus, when the NHS own data shows that vaccine antibodies wear off by up to 60% 6 months after vaccination? Another reason vaccine passports make no sense and a proof of negative test should trump everything.

You aren’t though - you are all calling for measures you agree with, in circumstances that don’t really affect you.

I mean how on earth have you got “forcing people to have a cough to isolate”? I said people who’d got a symptom should call for a test. If they’ve got COVID then they should isolate. They need to isolate because they can still pass it to others and it can still kill people. Is that really “stupid”?

I think they are?

If you get a PCR test and are positive, then on your NHS app/COVID pass thing, you have a domestic pass (not one for travel as they need to be up-to-date) for 180 days (so six months near enough).

The only reason I don't have that on my COVID pass is because I never got a PCR test when I got it. I knew I had it, and by day two I felt horrendous. Last thing I needed to do was to drive to the test centre and then get bothered by track and trace every day to see if I'd taken the dog on a walk.

People are doing that? The UK is testing more than any other European nation. So isn't that exactly what is happening?

I did a PCR last week for that chest infection I had, despite 4 lateral flows coming back negative, because the doctor said I had to, even though I knew full well it wasn't COVID.

I also didn't mean to suggest that you had said that. I was more talking about the general point and panic that can be caused. People get ill, especially this time of year, and pass things on. There's more bugs going around atm than ever it seems, because we've been sheltered for the last 18 months and our bodies aren't used to it. It's fine, most people deal with it. The NHS needs to be there, and the funding needs to be put into the right places and resources ready etc, to help people who can't - that's the same every year, in every country. There's measures we can all take and I for one am doing, but I do them so that I can at least enjoy things like being able to go to gigs again, and hopefully get to the Arsenal game at Goodison in a few weeks.

That's on individual governments I suppose.

@mill put it correctly - just do what you can to protect yourself and others. But that should mean being able to live a normal life other than that.

I personally don't see a mask as an issue in most places at all. If it helps while we're in the winter months then that's something that's easy to do. I'm not convinced a booster jab should be needed for people in their 20s but if by the time the roll out gets to my age, then if there's evidence it's needed of course I'll have that too.

Is that really what happens? I don’t remember having that, but I never had the app so can’t be sure. Still, a negative test should override any form of vaccine passport as antibodies can last a lot longer than 6 months.

I agree on the testing bit.

But yes. My mate has his from when he contracted COVID in August. He's got a 180-day pass on the app. So technically, I'd still be right as rain too until January. But I'm off the grid in that regard so just renew the pass when I'm doing anything that needs one.

Gibraltar have done this and more so now what?

No one has died but because a few people have a snotty nose the rest of the country gets Christmas cancelled on them.
What a way to live our short lives.
