Seems a bit stupid really, does Covid get more contagious after midnight. Either close or stay open, don’t prat around….
It's a sensible approach, undo the last restrictions made before the wave, if this doesn't bring down the numbers undo the previous and so on until the case numbers are under control.

These strange punitive measures on hospitality based on very little evidence it seems, purely based on older people thinking young people drinking is fuelling the spread

It can't possibly be them gathering in private houses...never

Governments can only use the carrot and stick method for so long - people got their jabs yet are still given restrictions.

Unless we find a cure Governments need to invest in more hospitals/beds/nurses/staff its as simple as that really as it isn't going away anytime soon and people simply wont stand for this much longer.

Does a bit to me as well mate, though its the logical next regressive rung of our last restriction , though they had this in the summer and everyone just went out that bit earlier to pubs. It closes Nightclubs essentially is probably the thing and keeping the cases down in young adults

It essentially closes down the late night scene in City Centers and big towns around the country, probably done with Xmas in mind, the two things are very distinct over here pints in a pub till about 12, then hit the club.

Haven't businesses like nightclubs only recently reopened in Ireland?

Doesn't Ireland have one of the highest vaccination percentages in the world?

They have since the 10th of Oct. We do, our problem isnt infections per say - if that makes sense, its our hospitals dont have the ICU capacity there were 20 odd availbel ICU beds in Ireland yesterday and its Nov, these are restrictions based on a lack of investment in bed expansion in critical care rather then an unexpected surge in cases, which is criminal in itself, successive governments should be ashamed of themselves.

Its across the board really, last orders will be 11:30 in pubs out the door by 12, will effect older people the same, most pubs its last orders at 12:00/1:00, you could be out the door at 1:30-2:00. But essentially closes down the late night scene, clubs etc.

Personally would prefer targeting anti vaxxers before measures that have an impact on the people who have done their bit

Seems like theres a huge gap between the two though. Can't see UK implementing additional measures until cases hit 50,000+ per day, maybe even higher than that.

I think, for various economic reasons, the UK can't exactly afford another lockdown. Can't say I don't envy them a bit though, it was like being in a different world when I've been there recently

They've never used the carrot and stick method, there is no carrot just a stick.. you're right that people won't stand for it, as the saying goes "there's only so many times you can kick a dog before it bites back".

It might make you feel better but if there's a problem it probably won't fix it to the level needed (and now Austria are normalising it, I think that's what 2022 will look like). But in winter there'll still be enough chains of transmission to older people to cause hospital problems, even if unvaccinated were locked away in camps or something

Greece was much more normal in the summer too but they do have the benefit of having an outdoor lifestyle for food/drinking etc.

If every adult was vaccinated in the UK there would be almost zero chance of lockdown. Other countries like Israel, Portugal etc are different.

We might not even lockdown the way its going although I do think its possible in late December/January.

I think we'll be testing out your theory by taking unvaccinated out of society but I agree I don't think that'll be til after New Year, same timing as last year
