Maybe if the counted the figures correctly...

There are different measures you can look at, if you have problems with a specific methodology - death within 28 days, death within 60 days, Covid as underlying cause on death certificate, excess deaths against an average.

All these are being produced regularly, and used in tandem. None are perfect, but all will be subject to assurance.

In the absence of perfect data, the correct response is to use it with caution and awareness of its’ limitations, not to throw it out or dismiss it entirely.

Turn on GMB just now...

'The gov is working on a plan C.... morroco cancels all flights from the UK... worries others could follow suit'

Absolutely loving this the absolute slugs

you could just not watch it? I only really watch Channel 4 news and the odd newsnight. they talk about plenty of other things.

the people who should be targeted are the officials who are leaking this 'plan c' etc information.

thats the kind of the worry, i think the only way they could force people to put up with them is closing pubs etc which would cause so much damage.

We can't close the economy every winter or every time someone says the NHS is struggling. The government need to find sustainable answers that don't constantly involve taking away personal freedoms. We put up with awful rules for over a year and it was horrible. No one wants this again and the experts need to stop suggesting it every few weeks. We've had 18 months to find alternatives that don't involve lockdowns and shutting businesses. It's not credible anymore and people will stop taking them seriously.

Simple things like not being able to play football for months or go to the gym for 5 months started to make me go mad last winter. It worries me what might happen this year.

There is way too much hysteria out there. No one wants more restrictions again and won't put up with them.
It won’t happen its one last push for the vaccine, threats and mis-information and lies like we could see ‘100,000 new cases’
Where’s the people for these potential new cases they are predicting?

Their modelling has been consistently wrong so I doubt the 100k prediction will be even remotely correct either. I'm fed up listening to the negativity from the media and experts. We need to be able to enjoy our lives.

Exactly mate that’s when you remove watching the media you life will be normal again

thats for government to fine, isn't it. The vaccination programme started great but thats all they spoke about for 6 months and were obviously briefed to talk about just that. now other countries have caught up, they need to think of more. i agree a lockdown is the easy way out and shouldn't be an option.

masks was the easy one of course. its not just the infection part with them, it probably changes the behaviour of people too without any real limit on freedoms.

The horse has very much bolted for this year. The NHS is worse than ever and it's only October- they need to find this long term solution but it's way too late for this winter.

This isn't just a covid conversation anymore - it's everything the NHS has to deal with including flu. I guess we've just got to hope the Israel solution works (jabs every 6 months for everyone, vaccine passport expires), which we'll inevitably end up doing even if they pretend otherwise. Most will be on 4 by next winter and those not locked out of society. Surely that'll work??

Again, you are calling for something that leads to the opposite outcome from the one you want.

I want to society to return to a stable condition; but when large parts of the population are ignoring the easily observable reality of the global pandemic (because it upsets them) then a return to normality is not likely.

COVID doesn’t care about your feelings, the economy, politics or anything else - it just spreads. Unless we do something effective about it, it’s going to keep killing people, filing up hospitals and ruining lives.

Adopting the ostrich position is not effective.

We will never totally remove covid from society. It cannot be eliminated and will be here probably for the rest of our lives.

The only ostrich position in all of this is the belief that zero covid can be achieved and that restrictions are sustainable in the mid to long term.

We need to keep vaccinating, and giving out boosters, and finding better treatments. Anything that helps increase vaccine rates needs to be given a go. Lockdowns and restrictions actually make those sceptical less likely to get a vaccine because they think what's the point.

Weird how they banned exercise innit.

Tbf, people on here were calling for those alternatives, but their ideas were mad too and still involved quarantine and draconian measures that simple were not realistic enough to be implemented.

The actual answer is just to get on with it, target the groups that need the booster jab first and then, if there's logistical room, can always roll those boosters out to younger/not clinically vulnerable people.

I think that's what they're going to do, but the hysteria will likely get too much.

They could make it easier by re-introducing masks (and they probably should never have ditched them in the first place) and/or having vaccine passports. But like I said yesterday, they were going to have the latter, and in fact were one of the first governments who announced it, only to flip flop after a load of both left-wing and right-wing opposition.

Probably best not to guess then. The obvious benefit we have now, is having a variety of methodologies to assure against, and many of those having been in place for a long time, so are useful for comparison, irrespective of whatever margin of error is in there, as you’re comparing like for like. I’d be very surprised if the margin of error was 20% though, as I say, that should have been identified by this point.

Also, bad form for me to pull you on a previous post, but “you defeat anti-vaxxers with facts”? Not sure about that, ya know.

I couldn't have been more clear that I was purely guessing with no grounding in any sort of fact. Everyone can do that, it's harmless - it's only harmful if you say it's definitive.

Anti-vaxxers are almost completely irrational, and you fight them on the grounds where they are irrational. If you fight them on the grounds that certain stats are irrefutable when the reality is they aren't then you are fighting on their turf.
