Alberta Children’s Hospital is planning to shutter 75 per cent of its operating rooms by next week due to strain from the fourth wave of COVID-19. The documents show Level 4 is the highest alert level in the Alberta Health Services pandemic plan. It results in a 60 to 75 per cent reduction in all activity, with “life and limb procedures only” being conducted.
Moving to Level 4 creates the potential for “increased morbidity and mortality” because of the delay in required surgical treatment for cancer as well as neurological, cardiac and spine issues, according to one document. The hospital will have three of its eight operating rooms open Friday and only two of eight open Monday, according to the documents, with doctors being asked to instead work in ICUs.
Alberta hospitals are grappling with the fourth wave of COVID-19, with twice as many hospitalizations as Ontario, despite having only one-third of that province’s population.
As of Wednesday, 91 per cent of Alberta’s COVID-19 patients in ICUs were unvaccinated.
The vast majority of COVID-19 cases that require hospitalization are in adults, but the strain on the system means children that need care for other health issues will now have care delayed.
Speaking to reporters at an afternoon briefing, AHS president and CEO Dr. Verna Yiu said all non-urgent surgeries are being cancelled across Alberta.
