keep wearing your mask, i'm not telling you to take it off.

Just stop demonising people who have decided they no longer want to, as they are allowed to
It’s not demonising people: it’s your choice and rightly so. That's something I do staunchly believe in.

However, on a general sense people have the right to remark about and question why, when we're still in the midst of a pandemic, people aren't wearing them.

Also, it does bring about the discussion about the wider social issues of morals namely compassion and understanding in society, or perhaps the lack of.

I've had COVID and I am double vaccinated, so the likelihood of me being able to contract and spread the virus is low - in reality, I probably don't need a mask.

Nevertheless, I tend to think of the wider issues namely public health (promoting good hygiene) to stop the spread of COVID or in fact other viruses like flu.

I worry how other people feel, namely the elderly or vulnerable, so I've made the concious decision to wear a mask in many situations. It's about others - not me.

It goes back to the point of what we should do rather than what we must do. I don't need to let people out in traffic if I have the right away, but it's polite to do so.

The two separate women, with their trolleys full to the brim of shopping, didn't need to let me past them in the queue in Aldi with my sole bag of ice, but they did.

For me, I'd like society to be more thoughtful of others rather than me, me, me. Rightly, people can choose not to wear them but it worries me why so many don't.

but where does it end? Both my dad and Grandad both died from the common cold. In reality that finished them off, it wasn't the true cause.

So that kills people... so we just wear masks pemanently?

There's no obligation to wear a mask and unless we're in a similar or worse situation to the early-COVID situation then we won't have to.

But personally, I don't think it'd be a terrible thing if voluntary mask wearing became a more common feature or norm in our culture like it is in some others.

Even if 25% of the population chose (importantly, not forced!) to wear them in situations like supermarkets it may reassure others and lower transmission.

Fewer cases of COVID, flu, common cold, chickenpox, rotavirus et al. being transmitted wouldn't be a bad thing, would it? It's not infringing on peoples' rights.

i've already said if people want to wear them its fine, but don't demonise ones who dont
To change tact slightly: if you were on a tube and someone sneezed all over you, choosing not cover their mouth and nose, what would you do and think?

They are under no obligation to do so (tissues, hand or arm are voluntary), but thankfully they're a common social norm. Would you feel uneasy about it?

I’ve noticed it gradually creep in on the tube. And I was at a services yesterday and it was like masks didn’t exist. I guess people are just going to get on with it now which is fair enough.

Hopefully it doesn’t mean lockdown again in the winter.
It's never really been policed, has it? Just relied on people's general goodwill. Like you say, I do wonder if they won't re-introduce some restrictions again once schools go back, especially if the concerns are valid around the vaccines that the vulnerable were given in winter having a shelf-life that sees their protection weaning off about now.

With or without masks (and with or without more vaccines) there'll be lockdowns. Cases will go up as it gets to the usual time for that sort of thing, its inevitable. And it'll happen every winter as its endemic now - the question really is do we want to have restrictions by default for the September- April/May months? (I mean more than masks) Personally I think its just the way it'll be going forward - i can see social distancing just becoming a natural part of winter months, and businesses/industries will adapt or fail

I still wear a mask in most places but do find it funny how the social media brigade on twitter who demonise those who dont never wore a mask until Covid despite the likes of seasonal flu killing 10,000+ people in the country every year.

Like those folk who cry about whale/deer hunting yet are happy to tuck into a burger that some other animal had been slaughtered for.

We live in a society of hypocrites.

I think we have to learn to live with it while it’s still fairly ‘novel’.

It would be my preference to have vaccines and masks than lockdowns every few months.

It’s a worry of mine that without the former we’ll get the latter.

It’s why I don’t really get the stance that people who are anti-vax, tend to be anti-mask and the most staunch anti-lockdown proponents.

I do feel that this stuff is fairly temporary and once the novel aspect of things wears off (people become immune to most variants and it falls into a flu season type pattern where boosters keep up with new strains) we can get on with life again back to the ‘old normal’.

Whilst we are transitioning to that I’d rather masks and vaccines over lockdown. If we were at close 100% vaccinated id be less bothered about masks.

Its not law... its not a task its a choice. And I like plenty of others have decided to not wear them now. Stop calling people selfish, its stupid.

Are all over 60 year olds 'selfish' for not staying in for the past 18 months and allowing under 60's to crack on with life?

and on your point of a chef... they have to to keep their food standard ratings, so i don't have to as they would eventually lose their job
Possibly post of the year this.
I'm not selfish, I just do what I want.
10 million people didn't make a life changing decision for my benefit so why should I have to suffer a minor inconvenience.

Have you always been this self-indulgent?

Completely agree with this. Masks were very commonly worn before the December lockdown and it doesn't stop the spread. Whilst they have some impact they're not bullet proof.

Cases will definitely go up in September/October. It will be interesting to see if a lockdown takes place but I agree its very likely.
