Yeah I've a foot in both camps on this. Clearly we've done well over the past eighteen months...

...However clearly what we're doing now is in no way sustainable, and to shut the whole country down for half a week for what is, at this stage, one case seems laughable. We're a nation which is heavily dependent on tourism, globalization and foreign labour, so once a majority of the population are vaccinated (hopefully very soon) We need to face the fact that the odd case of Covid will be in the Community and we just need to deal with it as best we can without shutting the nation down.
That is the big stumbling block on both sides of the Tasman, this fixation with ZERO.

yeah I don't no mate

hard to be too critical of their response as overall they've done brilliantly, but I don't see how elimination can work because the rest of the world isn't following suit
I keep saying this; Australia (And NZ to an extent) had a marvelous...as seen from outside...'"Covid War" but is making a total dogs breakfast of winning the "Vaccination Peace" and probably the subsequent eventual re-opening aftermath.

Stop Focusing on ZERO ffs

For other people in the UK outside of Merseyside. Whats mask wearing like in your area?

I'm just interested as its almost disappeared in Liverpool but I seen that TFL estimate 90% are still wearing masks on the tube. Its probably about 40% or less on Merseyrail.
It's still masks on in supermarkets and bars etc.
Early on when I'd go out for a walk along the Prom as I call it, these nearly Americanized Aussies call it The Boardwalk ffs...I keep listening out for The Drifters ( if you're really kean Google Margate Parade QLD 4019)
I'd sometimes forget my mask and get filthy looks, 3 weeks on its 50% in masks...still 100% in supermarkets though..nobody looks at me now.

There's a hell of a lot of spin here about how well we are doing on vaccination but still less than 20% of population has had both jabs.

Latest on the 6 O'Clock new from her highness the Queensland obergruppenfu sorry Queensland Chief Medical Officer
Has just said..."1 case of Delta means Lockdown."

Same where holidaying in Devon virtually non existent masks, everywhere. Same with service stations on way down. Where I live a bit better in Wales where masks still need to be worn, but depends on the shop challenging mouth breathing knob heads, been lots of incidents.

100% compliance here in Central France. Masks worn in supermarkets, shops, markets and all public places and transport. . You also need the controversial "pass sanitaire", proving that you have been fully vaccinated to get into bars restaurants, cinemas and on long distance trains.
Despite what you may see in the media, apart from the well publicised lunatic fringe minority, most Frenchies support the health measures.

Southport hospital and Ormskirk, so i have been told have zero Covid patients in.. The hospital my dad said when he went in last week is very quiet..

Thats good. Like I said, 5500 sounds a lot, but in the context of overall hospital admissions, I have no idea if that is in any way "bad". Sommet like 2000 hospitals in the UK I read once, so a handful of beds in each one.

5500 is probably relatively manageable during the summer. I'm sure that some hospitals will have 40 patients whereas some more rural ones may have 0.

There was an article in the echo recently and it mentioned how many deaths there were in July in each part of Merseyside and it was something like (can't remember the exact numbers) 6 or 7 in Liverpool across the whole month, it had break downs for Sefton, Knowsley, Wirral etc and they all were similar less than 10 deaths in the month. The numbers didn't seem massive but I suppose if you add them up across the UK it becomes a lot bigger.

+28,438 cases 26 deaths for the UK today.

Think they should stop with reporting these figures publicly. It looks like a done deal. Only academicians should be able to access the numbers if they ask for it via ministry.
Bare figures are usually meaningless, I agree.
If they are published they must be further quantified in terms of percentages or even per 100k.

That is absolutely shocking. Is it a supply issue or what?
Several factors at play I think. Our Govt didnt seem to push it; in fact they seemed quite happy to sit back in our (then) covid free world and see how the vaccine worked in other countries. Very much a wait and see approach.

Then when we got vaccines delivered the roll out has left a lot to be desired. Going to hurt now because this outbreak is going to be big (for NZ). We had a great opportunity to get the vast majority vaccinated and the Govt procrastinated too long. Fingers crossed Im still getting my first jab on Friday (I'm in the over 55 fat boy catagory).

Hospital figures - 157 deaths were announced today, up 146 on yesterday and down 4 on last Tuesday. 154 deaths were in English hospitals, up 147 on yesterday and up 2 on last week. The 7 day rolling average falls to 72.86

All settings - for the 28 day cut off, 170 deaths were announced today, up 144 on yesterday and up 24 on last Tuesday. The 7 day rolling average rises to 92.29

For the 60 day cut off, 193 deaths were announced today, up 164 on yesterday and up 31 on last Tuesday. The 7 day rolling average rises to 104.29
