UK lockdowns are a thing of the past.

The UK isn't ideal I agree but its much better than these two countries. For example, all PCR testing to travel abroad should be cancelled. You do not need to be tested just to get on a plane.
I don’t know that I agree with that. Many countries health care systems are stretched to the breaking point, so it seems reasonable that if you’re going to turn up in someone else’s country, you should at least be able to prove you aren’t an immediate risk of further burdening their hospitals.

They might not be, and to be honest if you think we’ve handled this much better than they have I don’t really think an argument based on observable facts is possible.
I think you’re misunderstanding what everyone is trying to say here. NZ did very well through the early stages of the pandemic. The UK’s response was poor, and at times here in the US, ours was catastrophically awful. Literally no one is arguing those points. What NZ have not done to this point is do a good job of setting themselves up going forward in the way a lot of countries have.

Evidence of double vaccination to travel I agree with but the testing needs to stop.

What the focus should be now is mandating vaccination by any means necessary. These anti vax lunatics need to be stopped. If 100% of the population is vaccinated there is no real need for testing as the deaths will be minimal.

These anti vaxxers are prolonging the pandemic and its an absolute disgrace. You see various stories of 60+ year old anti vaxxers in ICUs and you have to wonder, are these people mental?

Nonsense. A prison state isn't the answer.

Its not a competition to get zero deaths which Aus and New Zealand seem to think it is. The countries that are now living normal lives are what the majority deem to be successful.
True, its a political competition to get re-elected off the back of being 'tough in Covid'...and its working
The Victorian PM's figures - on the back of a lockdown extension...with no end in sight And a Curfew ffs, have GONE UP.

For other people in the UK outside of Merseyside. Whats mask wearing like in your area?

I'm just interested as its almost disappeared in Liverpool but I seen that TFL estimate 90% are still wearing masks on the tube. Its probably about 40% or less on Merseyrail.

Vaccinated people can carry and get sick from this.. the whole world are learning to live with this thing, NZ will have to do the same eventually or they'll be cut off from the entire world like a tribe in the Amazon. You are dead right NZ have ensured they'll be dealing with this thing for a lot longer than anywhere else.

Pretty much 100% round me. SD as well. Cant speak for pubs/cafe etc etc, just the shops I have been in.

Can only say that NZ are lucky they're a small country with a very particular economy.

Those saying they're handling this right and the UK should have done the same thing... sorry but you just don't understand what the consequences would have been. We aren't New Zealand.

Think it's perfectly fair to say they absolutely smashed it - and were able to because of things like pop, geography etc, even remoteness out there too (half the pop live in Auckland) - in the first 12 months.

My only issue is, if going for the elimination policy, then by all means do it, but they could genuinely have had the vaccine roll out done by now, which would mean they wouldn't have to have snap lockdowns 18 months in.

I know this is a short one (albeit it won't be if they get more cases which is definitely possible), and they're in a really brilliant position, but it's still not something that should be looked upon with praise in this very moment. 12 months ago, absolutely. But different now, the vaccine has been readily available for them.

The 170 deaths I meant. I thought the average would stay below 100 but it might end up going a bit higher.
Think the average is still below 100 - there's been 648 in the last 7 days which is 90-odd. For context, at the peak of the last wave we were averaging 1250 deaths per day.
