Well that's the risk, but we aren't getting out of this risk free are we.

We have to try and keep trying, so far what we're doing is working. The hope is the boosters will add further protection to those who need it.

The plan appears to be that actually yes, we are getting out of this risk free. Removing all restrictions on the 19th is going to happen, and we are not going to fix / improve test and trace; everything is going to go fantastically so we won't need it. There are even articles in the RW press today actually calling for test and trace to be stopped.

For all the reasons I've gone on at length about for the past year and a bit, this to me is absolute madness. How bad would it have to have been for people in charge to think "you know, lets do something to ensure we don't get absolutely crushed again next time if things go wrong" rather than trying to go back to a system that failed so horrifically last time?

I hope this has gone away, but if it hasn't and if we end up locking down the country again the government should be removed.

Hospitalisations increasing, but not in line with the number of positives.

What concerns me is the inevitable mutation from the disease being spread so widely. Again, we cannot ignore this.
Even though hospitalisations and deaths appear to be low for now. Another concern I have with the high levels of cases currently experiencing is with the amount of virus circulation so high, the scope for the elderly and vulnerable of any age (who are fully vaccinated) coming into contact with COVID is significantly increased with potential poor outcomes due to them being less resilient, despite vaccination given.

We'll see what actually happens when the time comes.

There's going to be risk at every single step of the way. The end goal is to get rid of testing and tracing and masks and all that. Now I'm not saying it should be stopped soon, and personally I think masks etc should stay if the trade off is everything else is 'normal', and that test and trace has to be in place in some form - though still to see an example from anywhere that is actually workable.

But the virus will always be here. So that will always be a risk?

What people don't realise is the virus will always be here. @tsubaki talks about track and trace but the Indian variant came from abroad. The simple fact is we need to move forward and allow people to live. There is no stopping this virus. Its here forever. Anyone who thinks otherwise is quite frankly deluded.

Hospital figures - 25 deaths were announced today, up 10 on yesterday and up 6 on last Friday. 19 deaths were in English hospitals, up 7 on yesterday and up 6 on last week. The 7 day rolling average rises to 14.57

All settings - for the 28 day cut off, 27 deaths were announced today, up 5 on yesterday and up 9 on last Friday. The 7 day rolling average rises to 17.57

For the 60 day cut off, 34 deaths were announced today, up 9 on yesterday and up 7 on last Friday. The 7 day rolling average rises to 21.71

2683 new cases in France yesterday.
Just saying.

And the same amount of daily deaths (and more as an average).

It's not a crap competition. I think it's clear the Delta variant really is at hold here in the UK and fortunately it isn't yet in France, hopefully it stays that way.

But the vaccines are doing their job. Which is hopefully the way out of this for everyone.
