Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

I suppose it depends on what is going on around the world - we absolutely 100% need to have a vastly better track, trace and isolate system already in place so that lock-downs are very much the last rather than the only resort for effective containment.

Once we have it, I think to ensure that system (and the public's understanding of it) stays fit for purpose and regularly exercised using it over the winter for things like this and the flu would be the best use of it - in addition to keeping the system itself up and the deaths we'd prevent, we'd also probably find ourselves being a centre of excellence and it would support a whole load of useful skills and industries too.
Lockdowns have never been a thing in our lifetime though. I'd say the priority should be stopping these very rare instances at source, but yes, having something in place ready to go would be good.

I'm still not sure how you can realistically implement it though outside of pandemic scenarios. The trade off just isn't worth it for people.

I think we both agree Aus managed it very well in the beginning, but not so well now.

We come out of lockdown tomorrow night, no new cases yesterday or today.
Probably have to wear masks for a few days then back to "normal" (as long as you have no plans to leave or enter the country :p)
Good luck. Your premier loves a lockdown. I have a cousin that lives in Perth and she is hoping to travel to see her mum in Vic and Tas next month so I hope it remains open for her. I come out of Lockdown at 6pm tonight but Brisbane LGA still is for another 24hrs but we still have to wear masks indoors for 2 weeks and carry them at all times. I live 2 minutes drive from the Brisbane LGA border so I am a little lucky. I want to head down to Vic in 2 weeks so hopefully there is no border restrictions then.

Interesting to see that and then this

I guess we are due another rematch of reality vs politics.

I’ll say this for the denizens of the Tory parts of SW1P, at least they keep getting back up again after being repeatedly punched in the face by the 400lb, 6’9 behemoth from the “unavoidable facts” stable.

That guy isn’t to be taken seriously. I’ve come to accept that over the duration of the pandemic.

Another one of those ‘Scientists for Hire’ who are loving their time in the spotlight and don’t wish to leave the stage any time soon.

There’s also more proof today that the decision not to end all restrictions last month was based on data that is now known to be defunct.

Eric is at Pagal's level for selecting data that suits his agenda. The science is clear for all to see. Vaccines work and less people will now die from COVID than flu.

Millions of people in the UK with AstraZeneca vaccine are not included in EU's passport scheme, The Telegraph reports

According to the Telegraph, up to five million people in the UK received doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine produced by the Serum Institute of India. The EU Digital Covid Certificate, launched on July 1, currently does not recognise the AstraZeneca vaccine Covishield as it has yet to receive an approval by the European Medicine Agency. Professor Adam Finn from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation says he believes the problem will soon be solved.

You have to wonder whether some of these decisions are brexit related. Germany are clearly leading the way by trying to ban brits from the whole of the EU regardless of vaccination status.

Thank FFFF I had the Johnson 1 jab vaccine.Pity the rest of the island hasn't. They set up a mass vaccine centre here to do 3000 a day.On average they are getting about 600.They will all be up in arms when they don't make the next green list.

All this while the vaccine roll out isn't yet complete. But boosters to come and everyone over 18 will have been offered (or hopefully had if they aren't stupid or have other specific reasons - my sister for example is 38 weeks pregnant so doesn't want to risk anything) their first job within 2 weeks, which means by - at the latest - early October, everyone will have had their second dose.

Are you sure that's accurate? EMA has approved AZ vaccine and it's being reported elsewhere that the UK chose not to be involved in this scheme...
