I listened to the NY Times podcast @longers linked and the expert, Donald G McNeil, was asked what his worst and best case scenarios. What you suggest was best case scenario, which I thought was alarmist.

How is it alarmist if it is the truth? It has only just started animal trials.

Hmm. This just has occurred to me.

In Bristol city centre today, there was an environment demo, which Greta Thrumberg addressed, So circa 20000 apparently. Reckoned it was more personally, but whatever. It was a school aged protest, so 1000's of school kids bunked off school to be there. (No issue with that myself, neither did the various schools by all accounts).

But it was half term last week. So unless no one from Bristol took Caspian and Angelica (yeah, Bristol can be right up its arse), abroad last week, isnt that an absolute recipe for spreading what some may or may not have been in contact with?

Roughly over the same period (October 2019 to the present) there has been 2,800 deaths due to coronavirus; compared to between 15,000 to 30,000 caused by the common flu. Over half a million annually die from the flu globally.

Correct Dave.. at the moment there shouldn't be the panic there is, not even 3000 dead. This thing probably has the potential to kill more than flu summer months will be key as viruses don't spread well in humidity which is why all these doses are around in winter...

Agree.. It's because it's named, it started off as the Wuhan Corona virus that started the panic. If next year the seasonal flu was given a name like Cambodian flu there'd be panic just like this even though it would just be the flu the same as most years but only different in name.

Anything is possible Dave - they could be erring on worse case scenario to reinforce compliance or they could be erring on best case to try and calm stock markets or the reality could that the timeframe purely depends on luck and how similar it is to other viruses that they have vaccines for.

Personally, especially since I have an 80 year old dad who is about to have heart surgery, I am going to keep washing my bloody hands!
