The purpose of the parachute is to stop you dying right? The vaccines are effective in stopping people dying? So they are a control measure??!?!?!?

No - control measures are things like ensuring your plane works, that it can cope with turbulence, that it has enough fuel to get to its destination, that the crew are properly trained.

If the answer to “is the plane safe?” is “I have a parachute” then you’ve not answered the question.

The same applies here - if a vaccine-resistant variant (or a new disease) appeared this week, what would we do?

Well it hasn’t.

The only way to be 100% certain of stopping people catching a disease is to lock them in the house and ban them from human contact. It would appear that would be the only effective control measure to stop human beings dying. You win I guess.

No, it isn’t.

We’ve had loads of diseases, including potential and actual pandemics, that were stopped by governments and health agencies putting in effective measures to combat them, suppressing outbreaks whenever they appeared, establishing common understanding of what is required and remaining vigilant for years.

Even something like food poisoning is really rare here now (compared to the US) because of all the work that goes on to ensure production method are safe and, when people do get sick, identifying and fixing what has caused it.

If we don’t have that, we end up where you claim you don’t want to be - in lockdown, because we do not have any other control measures to stop it.

Please feel free to contribute your own ideas as to what we can currently do to stop people catching this disease that aren’t just vaguely alluding to something.

Half the adult population is fully vaccinated and yet despite this, the reality is that we don’t seem to be any further on from this time last year.

Project Fear is still in full swing.
To be fair. If the government went 'wellllll were basically there, open it all up!!' and we had another huge wave of infections then people would hammer them again for opening up too early!

I can see their hesitation in opening up sooner..

At what point is 'were there'? This time next year and the year after we will still have Covid cases. We are averaging about a death a day out of 63 mil people.
Over half the population is vaccinated and the other half (Younger) with no underlying health issues are not at risk. Cases dont matter, hospitalizations are dropping, deaths almost zero. What are we waiting for?

I posted previously: The usually ignored scientific community are enjoying their day in the sun and will milk it for all it is worth.
The government have introduced draconian measure that are totaly unprecented even in war time conditions and they are not
going to let them go easily. Masks, testing, track & trace, WFH, rule of six, social distance, etc. it's all about conditioning. Do exactly what the government say or you will die. George Orwell couldn't have made it up...
