Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

There really is no need to be extending beyond June 21. The evidence is that vaccines work, overwhelmingly so, and if you're young then you are extremely unlikely to suffer from Covid which means that the risk/reward ratio is very much in favour of going ahead with June 21.

So despite what the 'Scientists for Hire' may yell, they can STFU.

“Vaccines work” is hardly a revelation, to be honest. That’s not really the point.

Vaccines do not eliminate the risk of Covid. There is increasing evidence that a single dose of vaccine does not provide fantastic protection against the Indian variant.

Some important figures in the field are questioning the wisdom of the 21st of June date, and I would rather take on board what they have to say than just tell them to “STFU”.

If the hospital stats stay down then see no reason not to open up properly.

The point isn’t what the hospitals are like now though.

Once the restrictions are lifted it could go wrong very quickly, that’s the concern. Because of the way it spreads you won’t see the impact for weeks by which point it’s too late.

For the sake of two or three weeks which would allow millions more people to be vaccinated.

I dont see any evidence yet to push the opening back. Things weren't too bad last summer when we had no vaccines so I'd say we are in a far better position now. The numbers are low in lots of areas of the UK and people deserve to be trusted at this point.

We'll then be getting into Autumn and you know what that brings, Pagel and the other 'Scientists for Hire' who are enjoying their time in the spotlight will start spouting off and then before long, people are thinking, well better to stay in lockdown throughout winter, then into next Spring, when a new variant is discovered... repeat ad nauseum.

People need to grow a backbone, realise that there may be a few deaths but that overall, it really isn't worth cocooning ourselves just because an unfortunate few will die.

Crap I hadn't thought of that...

LOCK EVERYTHING DOWN. DAVEK WAS RIGHT.

WFH has been a disaster all things considered

The women have put on weight

The dining room is a complete tip from work stuff

Housing bubble from tossers thinking they can all move to the lakes/seaside as WFH will carry on forever in their minds

Soon to be thousands of unwanted lockdown puppies being chucked into shelters when said previous tossers can go back in holidays and weekends away

Sooner you all are back in the office the better for society imo

TBF you can make an argument that it is going wrong, now. The spread of this variant is clearly causing concern here and abroad, and it being endemic here is probably as a minimum going to mean that travel to and from the UK is going to face increasing restrictions because we have not got a hold of it (again). I'll be amazed if Spain and Portugal don't follow Germany and France over the next few weeks.

... and that is just this variant; if we end up generating a variant that can get past one or more of the vaccines we have now, there is not going to be an alternative to lockdowns again should the death rate start to spike again.

That’s a real false premise. Nobody is talking about the autumn. Even delaying by a month would be well in the Summer. That month would potentially see an extra 8 million vaccine doses given.

As for the backbone stuff, bit immature.

Not really. The fear is being generated by people who are making coin from running their mouths every time somebody coughs.

It's a cast iron guarantee that if we give in now then those same people will be making the same noises come the Autumn, it's also a cast iron guarantee that their scaremongering will work on people like you (the royal you).

Just been to the Manchester airport viewing gallery with the Mrs and kids. Not a single mask in sight, absolutely heaving, glorious weather. Lockdowns over anyway, nobody is arsed any more.
