Escalating reports that June 21st easing could be in jeopardy because of this India variant

I think it will depend on whether there is any increase in hospitalisation in Bolton etc. If it stays relatively consistently low then I doubt major changes to the plan will be made.

On another note I know that its disappointing for Dave but the figures for the city region show that the test events were extremely safe with no increase in spread. Liverpool City Region should be pushing for additional events as soon as possible. Its great to see the city thriving whilst still remaining very safe.

I disagree. It cant be left to a point where some posters are accusing other posters (other posters in this instance who have argued for caution on health grounds) of wanting an outbreak.

That is just wrong and goes beyond the pale.

Then I'm afraid I'll need to revoke your access.

We've always been very consistent with this forum.

A reminder then that The Current Affairs forum is largely unmoderated. Our moderators take a step back from moderating. We won't/can't moderate this forum as we do the rest of the site, nor will we allow it to monopolise our time.

If we find anyone who finds this forum a bit too much, they become high maintenance and generally not suitable for this forum, we'll revoke their access to the current affairs forum.

Think you are talking tripe personally.

There are a billion variables in the chain to eventually getting a jab done.

I honestly cant believe that folk are dissing the vax programme.
I don't think he's dissing it. Actually the opposite. He's saying the infrastructure is there to deliver much more if we had a steady increased supply of vaccines. We know our supply is limited but sufficient to give everybody who wants one their first dose by end of July hopefully. That's still the aim and would be a fantastic achievement by all involved, especially Joe Public.

Read the online safety bill, I would suggest not a newspaper opinion as their online platforms are excluded from bill.

Do what digital spy did recently got rid of politics and general thread, they saw the wind blowing.

Well, here's a useful summary from gov.uk.

The draft Bill includes changes to put an end to harmful practices, while ushering in a new era of accountability and protections for democratic debate, including:
  • New additions to strengthen people’s rights to express themselves freely online, while protecting journalism and democratic political debate in the UK.
  • Further provisions to tackle prolific online scams such as romance fraud, which have seen people manipulated into sending money to fake identities on dating apps.
  • Social media sites, websites, apps and other services hosting user-generated content or allowing people to talk to others online must remove and limit the spread of illegal and harmful content such as child sexual abuse, terrorist material and suicide content.
  • Ofcom will be given the power to fine companies failing in a new duty of care up to £18 million or ten per cent of annual global turnover, whichever is higher, and have the power to block access to sites.
  • A new criminal offence for senior managers has been included as a deferred power. This could be introduced at a later date if tech firms don’t step up their efforts to improve safety.
None of that is a concern to this forum.

Just like there were reports that it was in danger because of the SA variant, mate.

All we can do is wait and see.

Fear mongering (not from you) - sick of it. We had 11 deaths yesterday. We're regularly hitting under 10 a day. The next test is how opening indoor hospitality etc impacts it and how well the vaccination programme prevents a surge.

Semi serious question as I don’t think it will happen but hypothetically, let’s say the Indian variant caused a delay in the reopening. Surely at this point the government would have to take full responsibility for this and would owe thousands if not millions in compensation to businesses forced to stay closed or alter their plans for trading if said businesses pursued claims? Or would they just pass it off as an “unfortunate setback” with Boris using his favoured “alas there was nothing we could do”.

Yes, a pandemic is an act of god. But this isn’t March 2020 anymore. At some point the government has to take responsibility (I know, I know) for its policies, actions (or lack thereof) massively effecting the people of this country. Not closing borders when the warning signs are there has damaged us before and it seems they still haven’t learned their lessons. It’s 2021, we see footage and hear reports from all around the world every hour of every day. It’s not like the bbc had to send David Frost over to India for a 6 o clock special to draw attention to the situation.

Maybe the Indian variant would have reached us anyway, but hopefully it would have done so after our first doses had massively ramped up again. The damage this could do to businesses and the populations mental well being would be ginormous.
