Yet Corbyn couldn't beat him or May and get a Labour gov in power.

Anyway, on your first point, I agree. 10 years of cuts has left us even more vulnerable to something like this.

Ironically, those 10 years of cuts are allowing all this money to be pumped in.
Yet Corbyn couldn't beat him or May and get a Labour gov in power.
And people will die unnecessarily because of that of that decision

And more like year's of higher taxes and borrowing.

The measures for freelancers and the self employed were a bit crap by the way. Way worse than for employees. Basically, whilst the measures for employees bankroll their employment, the measures for the self-employed tell them to go on benefits. Very poor.

Yeh I'm having a look into it now. Gonna apply for the UC and see what I can get.

I think it's £95 plus an extra £20 from the grand he promised to add to the UC scheme per-person (from what I gathered).

Thanks though Bruce, at least I know i'm on the right lines.

Like I said, it's not enough for most people to live off imo. If I can pick up 2 shifts per week and hopefully some other freelance work, then it will help me though. I'd be worried if it was the only source of income (which it may well be but I'm trying my hardest for it not to be).

Like my mate just said, tonight has just become unintentionally a country wide mass piss up, which I’m sure wasn’t the intention !

Mate who lives in Leeds city centre has said most of the bars are empty.

Guess that might be because most are working from home though!

I can afford it atm. Further down the line - depending how long this goes on for - I will cancel it if I need to.

I live by if you want something in life then get it if you can pay for it and justify it. If I can't, I won't. But given you're wanting everyone to be inside for the next few weeks, I think keeping Netflix is fair enough. It's a small little thing which brings some entertainment for £2.50 a week.

Honest question here, Nymz. What do you actually do? Not for work or anything. But while you can say I've come across as a teenager, all I get from you is that you stay inside all day, don't do much other than think about how ace it is living off pittance?

I'm sure that's not the case but that's how it comes across?

Edit: I know you know a lot about footy, too.

I think it's ace living off pittance? Not sure how you're coming to that conclusion.

I go hiking, I go running, play football 3 times per week, go to the pub, restaurants, weekends away. Just spent £150 on Adidas trackies to keep me comfy indoors.

I'm 28, so we're basically the same. You just come across a lot more selfish/naive and me a little more sensible & logical that's all.

I've just this second learned my long running application to a major employer has been rejected. Don't know if it was at all affected by the pandemic, but looks like I'm going to be frugal for a looong time.
Can't imagine much recruitment happening for a while when businesses don't know if they can even keep the staff they have. If this really does last 18 months...

If you have enough money saved then there will be plenty of opportunities to TEFL abroad, if you have a degree. I was speaking to EF Education First in Indonesia before the crisis hit and I thought it my duty to get home and help whichever way I could. However, if you (or anyone else is interested) from the start of the application to getting posted out there it would take about 1 month.

This just through from IPSE

IPSE (the Association of Independent Professionals and the Self-Employed), has warned that the government’s Coronavirus response measures leave the self-employed “trailing far behind employees”.

IPSE has said that although there is unprecedented support for employees, the government has done “nowhere near enough” for the self-employed. It has urged the government to provide better support by creating a Temporary Income Protection Fund. This should provide temporary, targeted grants to replace a proportion of the income lost by freelancers.

Andy Chamberlain, Director of Policy at IPSE (the Association of Independent Professionals and the Self-Employed) said: “Despite unprecedented measures to support employees, the government has still left the self-employed trailing far behind.

“The government has done nowhere near enough to support the self-employed. In fact, instead of supporting freelancers to help them keep their businesses going, it is pushing the self-employed into the benefits system. Worse, in the benefits system, the amount of money available will simply not be enough to cover many freelancers’ costs.

“In this drastic and grave situation, we urge the Prime Minister and Chancellor to match the steps they have taken for employees and create a Temporary Income Protection Fund for the self-employed. This should give a temporary, targeted cash injection to the freelance businesses that are struggling most – a financial boost to make up for lost income and keep them afloat.

“We urge the government to act on this and we urge anyone affected to
sign our petition to make this happen.”

@Nymzee not meaning to be nasty, but fed up of getting told I'm being thick or now, that I should just 'adapt' that a load of income has gone for me.

If the Olympics goes - which I think from a logistics and health standpoint it probably has to - I've lost about £7k (give or take) of earnings from that, the Euros and work I had lined up for Glasto. So it's hurt me. Big style.

I'm sorry if I'm coming across as a div to you. Maybe we can just agree to disagree?

Huge, huge credit to a Government showing some balls today, yes hard times ahead in relation to dealing with the virus and that is where we as general public need to fully cooperate with the instructions we are given and be aware of our fellow peoples struggles, physically, emotionally, mentally etc.

Time to put "All" before "Me"

But you HAVE to adapt is what I'm getting at - you do not have a choice.

I promise you once this is all over and you're back working normally you will have a greater appreciation of your spending as will I and many others.

They should have tried to find a way to say it's closed tonight not tomorrow but let pub/restaurant owners know tonight is basically a cleaning loose ends mission.
[/QUOT

There was no easy way to do it, but to announce a “ here today, gone tomorrow “ shut down was only ever going to lead to a big old knees up.

Maybe I'm more selfish because I was brought up in a household that was completey s*** on under the last Labour gov and by big business. I have always had to work for everything I've got (like I'm sure everybody on here has) and have that attitude.

My first priority is always myself and my family, then my friends.

Because when I was growing up I got nothing from anyone else. And at the end of the day you have to take care of yourselves in order to be in a good state to take care of others (which I try to do whenever possible).
