Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

My sister works in the Royal in Liverpool. It's large medical institutions like hospitals that are able to store the Pfizer vaccines at -70. When they open each batch they have to use it within so many days apparently. They really only use it on staff mainly and open it up to staff relatives when there is a danger that the dose would be ruined. I imagined that this would be common place around most hospitals. Which was why I asked the question of you.

So assuming that you haven't had a Pfizer jab, the chances are that you will be invited to take the AZ jab. I may be wrong but I believed you to be in your early or mid thirties. Given that people not much younger than you are going to be given alternative vaccines on health grounds, how does that make you feel about taking the AZ one.?
I'm 41 and the wife had her (Pfizer) jab at Guy's, so they'd fit into your category. I did ask about friends and relatives but I think at the time even she was blagging one a bit ahead of schedule so I had no hope. For me, I'll probably take what I'm offered (whenever that eventually is). If given a choice, however, I might opt for the Pfizer one just to sniff it to Johnson :hayee:

Yes, lets.

LOL @ them.
The Czech good old boys sacked another health minister this morning. Onto their 4th of the pandemic now :hayee:

I didn't say you said anything about hiding deaths. But you seem to think that they should hide the fact that they no longer recommend the AZ vaccine for the under 30's. They need to be honest and transparent as much as possible so confidence isn't undermined.
No. I'm not saying they should hide anything. I'm saying that they shouldn't, at this stage, stop giving AZ to everybody under 30, because the figures don't back this up.

Look, the majority of our under 30s are not due to be vaccinated for at least 2 months. There's absolutely no rush to make any decision regarding them. Those 2 months should be used to get more scientific data on what is causing the link between AZ and serious rare blood clots. I'm not denying the link, but we need more information on it.

Those under 30 who have already had their first AZ jab are being advised to have their second. So they aren't affected by it. Plus the vast majority of cases have been in women. And of the 19 British deaths, only 3 have been under 30. 16 have been over 30. Where's the data to support their decision?. It just isn't there. But millions more people who are due to have their first and second AZ doses over the next couple of months may possibly have had there heads turned by this.

Anyway, the continued roll out of the vaccine is my main concern. Hopefully I'm worrying for no reason and it will carry on apace.

Pity she doesn't work in the Royal in Liverpool. Think the window cleaners and their cousins have been getting it from there. I know my nephew and his partner have both had it and their still in there 20s. My sister is one of the bosses though.:)

Whats the difference between AZ and J&J / Novavax?

I know neither of them are MRNA like Pfizer/Moderna so could have the same potential "issue" as AZ.

Just looked them up mate. None of it makes any sense to me but both AZ & J&J are what's called viral vector vaccines, and all 3 use spike proteins. So as a layperson I would guess that they're at least similar in makeup.

How that transforms into effect on blood clotting is anyone's guess.

Been researching that, especially since I got the JNJ jab yesterday! As you say the JNJ is adenovirus-vectored tech like AZ

There weren’t any red flags during the trials but guess we’ll see if any change as more data comes in
During trials for the Janssen vaccine involving nearly 44,000 people, 10 of the 22,000 people who received the blank dose developed a blood clot – or thrombo-embolic events - while 14 of the remaining 22,000 who were inoculated, developed a clot. “This is about the same”, for both groups said Dr Annelies Wilder-Smith, SAGE Technical Advisor. “There’s a slight imbalance, but it’s still not statistically significant,”

My missus is 60, same as me, but she's a worrier.

She's literally just come up to me now and said she's worried about having the second AZ jab. I know it's going to play on her mind until we have it done, which is not until late May.

She was fine until this afternoon. How many households in the UK are going through this now?
Just tell her the insurance premiums are paid up and you’ve been cultivating a bit on the side for the last 10 years, sure that will allay her fears.

I`m sure they`re all happily sat at home, locked down and on curfews, content with this thought.

In the meantime, we can all get back to outdoor guzzling, swilling, eating muck and doing the hokey cokey at the beach bbq`s from Monday ;)
...it'll remain outdoor. Put a duffle coat on.

Thats your choice and at least you have some protection.

Contraceptives have a bigger % of blood clot issues than this vaccine has reported yet millions of women around the world use them regularly.

I think the numbers are very low, something like 1 in 600,000 people. Considering the very rare side affect is classed a 1 in 10,000 thats a tiny portion.
TBH, I wouldn't believe anything this lot have to say. That vaccine looks like it was never meant to be.

You get what you pay for, I suppose.

Loads mate.

Many - particularly under 30s - will also jib the vaccine because their takeaway will be the risk of blood clotting is greater than the risk of Covid.
