Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

Are they being ignored or simply less frequent than with AZ? Genuine question. Personall I agree with those above that if the risk of suffering with Covid is lower than dying from the vaccine then it makes sense to pause it, or make it conditional on a consultation with a doctor before proceeding. People have compared it to the contraceptive pill but it's necessary to consult a doctor and get a prescription before taking it.

AZ update...

Covid causes clots in 10-25% depending on severity and hospitalisation. A very few people out of the 20 million people who have had AZ have clots.

If you’ve had the first, have the second.

Course Change ...Change in preference for under 30’s

I think Van Tam is not coming over well here....
What about those under 30 who have already had their first dose of AZ?

It's a ridiculous decision.

It does. This will destroy vaccine confidence in all age groups, people won't go for second doses, the overall program will be slower and a resurgence of the virus will happen.

It's a disaster.
Dunno, I still think most people in my generation are very easy going with this thing mate.

Not meaning to stereotype, but it's much more likely to be your middle aged, 'middle England' people who are anti-vaxers, I'd imagine.

It's a ludicrous call though, IMO.

Not as much, because they haven't had the same problems in anything like the same volume.

They‘ve not had the same political and media attention. It is a truism that the more you look the more you see....We might as well just let Sky take over the MHRA and make decisions based on Twitter trends.....

I think they have played this quite badly. Many people of all age groups will not trust the vaccine regardless now. I still find the reaction to it very odd. The numbers are still so small and the benefits massively outweigh the negative here. I will happily go for my second dose of it either way. I would have taken any of the vaccines on offer tbh and still feel the same.

I think the age group determines that. If you're in your 20s or even 30s you'd stand little chance of dying from Covid19. Under those circumstances people will want to swerve the AZ jab. Yes, I know that even these age groups stand more chance of dying from covid19 than a cerebral embolism from a vaccine, but the perception around AZ now - that it is flawed - is too great to ignore by that age group.
It will be now the Govt have made this decision about U30s. Before that, if I was a male aged 25 I'd be thinking nearly all these blood clot cases were women. I wouldn't be in the slightest worried. I think the govt have just done their very own Sandy Brown mate. I think they've panicked. They should have waited until they knew more about the link so they could make clear policy based on evidence.

The AZ vaccine represents around 60/70% of our current supply and, despite what has been happening across the world, confidence in it has remained high within the UK. The government has undermined that confidence today for no better reason than the other governments we have been criticising. The vaccine is perfectly safe for 99.99% of it's recipients. That's all the announcement we needed to make today. That, and listing severe blood clots as a very rare side effect. They didn't need to do anything else.

They won't be vaccinating the under 30s for another 2 months yet, by which stage they may have more evidence regarding the blood clotting link. But they've further undermined the AZ vaccine now and millions of 30-50 years old who are due to have it in the next 2 months could easily be thinking what if.

Not at all, it's spread through the ages

They said have the second ......
I know they have, which completely undermines their point.

"We're going to stop it for everyone under 30, because we think that there's this tiny chance you could develop blood clots. Unless you're under 30 and have had the first jab, in which case, take the risk."

It's nuts, Pete.

I broadly agree with you, but we need to make a clear distinction here - this isn’t a government decision. The idea that Johnson would want to implant any doubt in people’s minds over AZ is ludicrous. Like it or not, this is a result of having an independent regulatory agency.

I think it's a daft decision to suspend it. Doesn't mean it shouldn't be investigated, like, but surely there'd need to be a lot more evidence.

There's also a load of people under 30 who have already had the first jab of AZ - like @Connor.

Doesn't really matter for me, I won't be getting whatever jab I'm getting for at least another 2 months, but just seems a bit mad.

It'll be reinstated in a few weeks again I wouldn't worry its the hokey cokey with the AZ vaccine lol

With respect to vaccine confidence in the youngsters...

You have seen the mass gatherings etc
They want lives back to normal asap

If vaccination equals holiday to ibiza or football then they won't give a hoot about this.

The under 30s live day to day and deal in data more than any other demographic.

This won't concern them at all.

Tbf if they didnt do anything would under 30's want to take the risk knowing they are not much at risk with Covid in general?

Would rather get the under 30's vaccinated with something than have them risk deciding against being vaccinated all together over scaremongering in the media.
