Chairman of the EMA stating that there is a clear link between the AZ vaccine and rare blood clotting in the brain.

"In my opinion we can now say it, it is clear that there is an association with the vaccine. However, we still do not know what causes this reaction," Marco Cavaleri, chair of the vaccine evaluation team at the EMA, told Italian daily Il Messaggero when asked about the possible relation between the AstraZeneca shot and cases of brain blood clots.

Cavaleri added that the EMA would say there is a link although the regulator would not likely be in a position this week to give an indication regarding the age of individuals to whom the AstraZeneca shot should be given.

MHRA, look like they may offer a different vaccine to the younger cohort.

Not really mate, but uncertainty in the arena this is operating in, can be a killer blow.
In ordinary times the precautionary principle would mean you hold off if you're not sure until you gather enough evidence to be sure. We seem happy to ignore that and plow on regardless and hope that everything will be alright in the end.

Some interesting stuff from our neck of the woods, especially when you compare to the U.K.

We’re in the EU been in lockdown since the start of Jan, yet our cases are down outrageously compared to peak - despite lagging behind the U.K. for vaccine, we are posting similar reductions.

It begs the question in both jurisdictions is the driving variable vaccines or restrictions.....interesting.

No doubt mate, there is a political will for this vaccine to remain on the shelves, then a risk assessment must be done, re: greater good etc. That said in normal circumstances I dont think it would have gotten over regulation.

I think everyone even the MHRA is looking at this now.

It's unfortunate that the vaccine has been so wrapped in the Union Jack by the government as it must make it very hard for the MHRA to look at matters objectively.

Think it's safe to say that in the UK, lockdown has been the biggest driving factor in getting cases down.

However, schools opened up fully again a month ago, and people - as a lot of posters in here liked to scream and shout about - were and are still going into places of work etc over the last 3 months too.

Think we're now probably starting to see real world results of the vaccination programme too, on top of the results of lockdown.

You’d hope ethically they would be compelled if the data was there to indicate a risk, I’d also imagine a pooling of international data and collaboration may also be a sway.

It’s good it’s under review, I was a bit worried they would plough ahead regardless, but seems now they are having a serious look and aren’t available for comment while in conclave, that’s a change of tact from them.

Likely a parallel process mate. The big test will be on Boris getting a pint day, is that next week?
