Maybe. But again, that's personal responsibility.

Right now, the date of April 12th can be met. That's all that matters. In 4 weeks' time we'll see if May 17th can be met.
But personal responsibility is influenced by Government action and by the messaging that people receive.

Ultimately, the Government will decide on the policy, and they are very much minded against anything that gives bad news and pursuing recovery in favour of economy. So I think the dates will be met.

The scientists have all said that people will continue to die from covid. The one guarantee of life is death. People need to face reality. Vaccinations will hopefully prevent 95+% of death but some people will unfortunately still die.

or we could just, you know, do the things that have prevented thousands of deaths *and* lockdowns in other countries

Lockdown means that everyone has no life. We might as well all be dead if we are in lockdown forever. COVID is here to stay and anyone who thinks lockdown is a long term solution is living in fantasy land. Reduce the impact on the NHS, vaccinate as many as possible and its time to get back to normal.

We don’t need to lockdown ever again if we have this controlled; we wouldn’t have needed to do it over Christmas if we had kept it under control during the summer. Lockdowns only happen when control is lost.

20000 deaths a year would mean we’ve not got it under control. What we need is a system by which this (and other diseases) can be quickly identified, traced, contained and isolated. Controlled, in a word.

We still don’t have this, and the government suggest we won’t. Of all the idiocy they’ve come up with this past fourteen months, this is the one that will come back to haunt us.

There's been no mixed messaging in regards to the dates though.

The messaging has been clear. And it's been clear that certain tests have to be met.

Anybody with sense knows that.

Ultimately the recovery does need to be as quick as possible and I think the dates will be met barring a real drop off in the vaccine roll out. We've now got enough evidence that it's a combination of lockdown (probably a majority share of the reason) and vaccinations that have helped slow the rate of infection down.

Schools were open 3 weeks and twice weekly testing - also during holiday times too, by the parents - and there's not been a rise in infections. Hospital numbers continue to drop, deaths continue to fall. There's no current reason why the dates won't be met.

That doesn't mean I have faith that the government will make the right call if something starts to go wrong, btw. Just, right now, relatively speaking, it's going well.

Er, not really true.

The winter second wave was less to do with the summer than it was just a natural factor of colder weather, seasonal changes and people spending more time indoors is going to result in a respiratory illness spreading quicker.

The main cock up the government made was locking down too late in November, probably, and then the real disaster was putting London and the south east into Tier 2.

Modelling is not "a wild guess".

Just across the channel they are in the teeth of a deadly 3rd wave.

Stay in la-la land if you want. But this summer will be carnage if the restrictions are taken off by late June.

You’re the only person that wants to stay in this quasi state of controlled restrictions indefinitely.

I wonder why that can be ?

Mr Cavaleri said that among younger vaccinated people there was a higher than expected number of cases of cerebral thrombosis – blood clotting in the brain –compared with the general population.

However the EMA has insisted as recently as last week that the “causal link with the vaccine is not proven” and continues to recommend people take the opportunity to get vaccinated when it is offered.

it is - the disease was at a very low level over the summer.

It could, with a properly resourced and led effort, been kept at that level for as long as required.

It has been nice to see people over the Easter weekend but there is definitely going to be long term damage for a lot of younger people. Talking to people on apps is nothing like seeing people in person and communication is completely different.

I'm not one to try to take positives out of the pandemic as the last year has been absolutely dreadful but it does make you realise how good life was before all this started.
Lot of older people too Joe. The medical effects of this pandemic effects the older generations more, whilst the socio-economic effect will undoubtably hit the younger generations harder.

But the mental side effects hit us all. Long term this could be the biggest issue of all. We don't really know yet
