I was listening to BBC radio this morning on the school run, the discussion was around Vaccine passports and the UK roadmap. Lots of discussion about dates and deadlines, not a single mention of the tests that are applied to those dates being met. There's been no mixed messaging in regards to the dates though.
The messaging has been clear. And it's been clear that certain tests have to be met.
Anybody with sense knows that.
Ultimately the recovery does need to be as quick as possible and I think the dates will be met barring a real drop off in the vaccine roll out. We've now got enough evidence that it's a combination of lockdown (probably a majority share of the reason) and vaccinations that have helped slow the rate of infection down.
Schools were open 3 weeks and twice weekly testing - also during holiday times too, by the parents - and there's not been a rise in infections. Hospital numbers continue to drop, deaths continue to fall. There's no current reason why the dates won't be met.
That doesn't mean I have faith that the government will make the right call if something starts to go wrong, btw. Just, right now, relatively speaking, it's going well.
The media narrative also encourages mass gatherings, because, in spite of the majority adherening to guidelines and advice, the media project that violation of restrictions is the norm - they'll show busy parks, busy beaches, gatherings.
Ultimately it's a debatable issue about the rights and wrongs of providing clear dates (I have my opinions, but it's only my opinion).
The much bigger issue will be the management or not of vaccine passports, the infrastructure that exists around isolation compliance (coupled with T&T).
