Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

For those of you that follow these things more closely than me. Whitty has been talking about a third wave that would potentially be as big as the one we had in January. In January a few million people had had 1 vaccine. By the time things open up again next week that figure is going to be about 32 million. At the same time, a lot of discussion is about having vaccine passports as though the vaccine gives us complete freedom to act as we wish.

Something doesn't add up.

I believe the thinking/hope is that the vaccine rollout will prevent serious illness, hospital admission, and ultimately deaths. We are stepping into the unknown to a large degree.

Edit: but to clarify from conversations they are still expecting a spike in mild and asymptomatic transmission.

You’re the only person that wants to stay in this quasi state of controlled restrictions indefinitely.

I wonder why that can be ?
I want a safe return to some sort of life approximating normality. I am not some nobhead who believes we can return to old normal any time soon. We cant. If it's tried again this summer there will be utter carnage.

For shame. Being left behind by the rest of the world again!
Once global warming truly kicks in and we have a tropical climate a host of creatures with a myriad of gifts will move here and we can become the global hub for pathogens and once and for all show the great bunch of lads who is boss!

It's the one currently plaguing the globe.
Oh dear...
The 'UK variant' is called as such due to the fact it was discovered first in the UK due our science and expertise being genuinely leading edge in such matters. Nobody knows 100% for sure exactly where the variant derived from.
It's the same with the SA variant. Just because it is called the UK or SA variant doesn't mean it was originated in that specific country.

Only red, white and blue animals though, preferably having all three. A mark of British Quality.

It was definitely the UK - the UK variant is easily identified by its anti EU properties and it's accompaniment of a tiny Union Jack.

The SA variant came from UK travellers going to SA on safari and asking why zebras and giraffes aren't red, white and blue as 'we once owned all this'.

End of!

No, Dave, Covid-19 is a new disease, a novel beta-coronavirus of unknown aetiology that jumped to human hosts in China, in Wuhan. It was identified as related to SARS-CoV (also from China) and several other tropical/subtropical bat-borne SARS-like coronaviruses. There are no known zoonotic (harmful to humans) coronaviruses found in UK bats.

Which I suppose is where Whitty's remarks about "managing it like the flu" come in? But my impression with the flu jabs is that they generally stop you getting the flu, not that you still get it but it doesn't kill you.
