Why is there such a panic from the UK government over a EU export ban? Maybe it's because of the UK strategy of getting as many with the first dose and delaying the second dose, a delay that may have been pushed to the limit already, any ban from EU potentially flushes the entire UK strategy town the toilet.

They set aside supply for second doses. Hence why the news last week of the supply shortage will have no impact on the overall rollout and/or second doses. Believe it or not, I actually think the NHS know what they're doing here.

Sad bruce mate isnt it in this modern age we cant get together and just fkn agree something for the common good of the people,
I include both the Uk and EU and those further around the globe,
Just sod the money and politics for once and just get it sorted do away with the patents and help mass production set ups around the globe.
Knock on effect the poor countries get new jobs and skills as well as a way to handle the virus.
I know , that I have a go at the EU on here but I dont have anything but respect and admiration for the people over there, there family and community are miles better than us for example .
Bloody shame the way these politicians are behaving.
I quite agree.

A real positive surprise for me with the vaccine is the high uptake in the UK. I previously would have bet that the anti vaxxer sentiment in the Uk would have been much higher, but happily seems I got that completely wrong.

Anecdotally I only know 1 or 2 mates who’ve said they’re not getting it, one of whom is well down the conspiracy rabbit hole, so not surprising.

Those people who refuse the vaccination, if they catch covid, should be made to pay the cost of their treatment.

Most people will comply otherwise they won't be able to go abroad etc. I do think theres a chance that they bring in a similar scheme to Israel but thats still under debate isn't it.

Believe it or not EU threats of vaccine export bans will do little to help the EU itself, it's a lose lose scenario. They trash their reputation around the world and cut off their nose to spite their face for hardly any perceptible gain at all.

It's nasty revenge politics from a few failed European leaders acting inspite of the larger Covid menace and the massive world crisis. These politicians doing something to save their own faces and reputation being far more important to them.

There are though a few clear winners from the EU's thinly veiled threats, Covid 19 and The Grim Reaper

The UK not sounding too good either, basically saying send us what we are contracted to get while Europe get less than 30% of their contract, sounds alot like.. we want a healthy 32 year old in stoke to be vaccinated before a 75 year old in Rome.
Vaccines exported..
USA 4 million
EU 38 million
UK 0
My father is 73 years old, still no word on when he might get his vaccine, theres people half his age in UK already done, and 1in 3 of those were done by a vaccine sent to UK out of Europe.

This makes the EU statements seem quite bizarre.

On BBC covid news feed:

"During a briefing, executive vice president at AstraZeneca, Ruud Dobber, said the UK did not receive any of its AstraZeneca vaccines or components from the EU.

Fellow executive vice president Mene Pangalos then clarified that one "tiny" batch which "hasn't been approved yet" had been sent to the UK from Halix, a plant in the Netherlands that has an agreement with AstraZeneca to manufacture the vaccine.
Halix was one of the University of Oxford's original partners for manufacturing the vaccine, Reuters reported.

The UK is mostly self-sufficient when it comes to the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine - and has ordered 100 million doses of the jab.

The EU is mainly being supplied with the AZ vaccine by the US and by a site in Belgium, the company confirmed.

The Pfizer vaccine is made in Europe and a large percentage of those imports are the Pfizer vaccine.

Really your point is entirely to do with the AZ vaccine. The European production plants earmarked for distribution to Europe had well publicised problems. The EU accused them of some kind of industrial espionage which was found by their own investigation team to be not only spurious but absolutely incorrect.

The British production plants were earmarked to supply Britain first and any surplus could be redistributed. The problems with the European plants are a company and logistical problem for Europe not Britain. The EU having got nowhere with their allegations against the European plants in their frustration turned their guns on the British plants and launched an audacious attempt to get Britain to release AZ from any written contracts so they could supply them instead

It's all the AZ dispute just wrapped up another way.
