Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

With regards to the Easter, it has been recommended that they stay open, but to the best of my knowledge that's far from confirmed due to union concerns.

With regards to the teaching part, the initial conjecture was that it would be more like a baby sitting service for key workers and those who are vulnerable.

Over the past few hours, that's been mooted and the talk is now of providing some form of education although that's up for a lot of discussion regarding how.

With regards to the list, it's the usual suspects: police, fire, NHS, prison, probation, MOD (to back up mobilisation), social workers, LA staff; local govt. etc etc.

There's also delivery drivers, those working in logistics and possibly supermarket staff. This is all from three different but very reliable sources.

Are any of those sources the Cabinet Office, because that's who the PM said would produce the list? I've seen plenty of letters from schools trying to prepare and second guess the list but if the Government dont define the term there will be inconsistencies which will rile people and could even limit the impact of closing the schools as more children than intended are offered places at schools.

The tech companies alone are sitting on around $450 billion in cash. It's a double edged sword though, as people would complain if the rail companies (for instance) had sufficient profit to provide for a rainy day, and then complain when they have nothing spare to help cope with a fall in passengers numbers of around 40% over night. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

Not really, you're confusing infratructures. Tech makes that profit because it is relatively young, the railways have been subsidised more by tax payers than almost any industry I can think of as it's a necessity for people to work, but its privatisation has failed miserably, without question, with scant improvement save for dividends.

That's part of the primary list for consideration. Then they forgot the support staff in schools and their supply chain and then theirs and it got so enmeshed they realised it was becoming embarrassing for the government, again.

All relevant sectors have been told to compile their lists of who will need the service and this has been pushed down onto the local authority (LA) to organise.

I personally know that the former was one done yesterday (from my own experience) and I've been informed that the latter was being organised today.

In layman's term, they're putting the numbers together to know how many children and where. Schools in Liverpool have already been selected and informed.

With regards to sources, it's different people at different in the chain although all giving the same information. In hindsight, this should have been started earlier!

Nope. The whole shebang has to have a reset, because modern life, greed, the lust for power and profit has lead to such a fragile system that can be brought to its knees so readily.
This hasn't been unexpected, far from it, but little if any preparation was there. In the UK the parlous state of the NHS has left its staff out in the open after years of austerity. Community spirit has all but evaporated since the early 80s, replaced by right wing jongoism and the selfishness so evident recently.
Nature has a way of reeling things in when they get out of hand and before it's too late we need to respect the planet first and work up from that. I have little faith it'll happen though.
Spot on mate.....but some will be voting these twunts back in....those who live in their own little bubble of I'm OK and feck you jack....barstewards all of them.

It's ridiculously ill thought through and there is no ideal scenario but how long does it take to come up with a definition of a key worker?

OK. So what happens when you have children from the same family in schools in different LAs who don't have the same definition of a key worker? Our LA called us today and stated they were waiting for the government's definition of a key worker. My children attend schools in a different LA to the one I work in but they too are waiting for the definition of a key worker. If you gave that definition out, schools could communicate it and would very quickly know what the numbers will be.

How ironic that after more than a decade of trying to destroy the role of the LA in education, the government are now depending on them.

Certain bi food shops today letting the vulnerable over 70s get their food items first ......great idea ......they were cueing around the block in the large cities first thing .......is this the herding the government population they were supposed to be protecting?
Also they could be buying food for anyone in the family - on paper a sensible idea, but in practice maybe not that brilliant?
@COYBL25
Back down to 90%
Firstly does food have a sexuality
Why were they playing snooker at the shops lol

On a more serious note shops in Ireland have been designating special times for older customers for the last few days

Some schools LA’s have jumped the gun in a frustrated effort to plan and get information out because they were promised it today but didn’t get it. It’s an absolute mess.

There are obvious ones, frontline medical staff, police etc, butbthe those who drive delivery trucks, or make the ventilators or make the parts to make the ventilators or feed the ventilator makers or provide the food to feed the ventilator makers or pack the food to....

Looking highly likely that my job will be gone in the next few weeks due to lack of business as a result of this outbreak. I have no idea where I stand with regards to help with rent payments, utility bills, council tax etc.. I’ve seen other countries are going out of their way to provide their citizens with a temporary immunity to various bills during this period. I have seen things like ‘no evictions for renters’ or ‘universal wage’ (which appears to have been talked down now) but it’s not enough information. Doesn’t appear like the system we have paid heavily into our whole lives is doing an awful lot to provide assurances and assistance for us when we could really do with it.
