Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

There are headteachers on Twitter asking for a confirmed list of occupations that qualify as key workers and whether or not both parents have to be key workers. There are one or two "unofficial" lists with no actual source floating about and a fair bit of guesswork but nothing from the powers that be to answer a simple question that they created.

It's baffling incompetence - even for a Government that continually finds high profile roles for Chris Grayling.

But it's ok cos they made the announcement yesterday so that schools would have time to prepare.

Nope. The whole shebang has to have a reset, because modern life, greed, the lust for power and profit has lead to such a fragile system that can be brought to its knees so readily.
This hasn't been unexpected, far from it, but little if any preparation was there. In the UK the parlous state of the NHS has left its staff out in the open after years of austerity. Community spirit has all but evaporated since the early 80s, replaced by right wing jongoism and the selfishness so evident recently.
Nature has a way of reeling things in when they get out of hand and before it's too late we need to respect the planet first and work up from that. I have little faith it'll happen though.
This really. It's the shameful side of capitalism that most businesses are run on a knife edge to maximize profits with little in the way of contingency for major events like this.

When the trouble hits, the big-wigs bail with little but hurt pride, leaving the base level workers in the worst mess.

The list of children is currently being compiled (at least it is in Liverpool) and the schools are being selected where these children will be taught.

All police were told to inform bosses by midnight last night if they would need the service, so it’s not going to simply be done on a whim for people to misuse.

If your child isn’t invited, they aren’t going in to where ever they’ll be sent to. Most schools are preparing to be open on Monday as a precaution.
The thoughts are also that the schools will have to stay open for those kids through what would normally be 2 weeks off for easter. They've no idea what staff they need, what to do with the kids (obviously they can't just continue teaching and leave the rest out), or if they'll even be paid for it.

They've been told its only kids with both parents in key jobs, still don't know exactly what jobs this includes, but what if the parents are separated?

Well we've got Home social care workers recieving one single use face mask last Friday 6 days on they wait for their clean new ones, welcome to myopia, very frail grandma and grandads.

Whats all this about basic universal income?

Can't see it happening like but would be a welcome extra bit of income if we all get it (although I imagine it'll be means tested).

Iain "The Grim Reaper of the DWP" Duncan-Smith has poo-poo'd the idea, as it would "incentivise people to not go to work"
Which A) Is exactly the point of it at the moment.
And B) Is the total opposite of what all the research shows.

I hope he gets it, the horrible little baldy ming.

Errrrr...
I work in alternative provision teaching kids from all backgrounds. Majority of kids I teach have been kicked out of school for bad behaviour and that could be for many reasons. I teach kids who people moan about on social media for going round in gangs beating up innocent kids so they can post it on social media. Work with kids who carry weapons and have used those weapons on people just so they get a reputation for been hard, majority of them brag about robing people and beating people up. Sadly they get put into alternative provision with vulnerable kids with disabilities and struggle in life. These kids I say who need a good hiding, get put into the vulnerability list because schools can’t deal with them, when the reality of things is, they are just disrespectful kids.

Even the Trump Show is going to give out $1000 per adult, apparently (and $500 per kid).

The tech companies alone are sitting on around $450 billion in cash. It's a double edged sword though, as people would complain if the rail companies (for instance) had sufficient profit to provide for a rainy day, and then complain when they have nothing spare to help cope with a fall in passengers numbers of around 40% over night. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

With regards to the Easter, it has been recommended that they stay open, but to the best of my knowledge that's far from confirmed due to union concerns.

With regards to the teaching part, the initial conjecture was that it would be more like a baby sitting service for key workers and those who are vulnerable.

Over the past few hours, that's been mooted and the talk is now of providing some form of education although that's up for a lot of discussion regarding how.

With regards to the list, it's the usual suspects: police, fire, NHS, prison, probation, MOD (to back up mobilisation), social workers, LA staff; local govt. etc etc.

There's also delivery drivers, those working in logistics and possibly supermarket staff. This is all from three different but very reliable sources.

It's a fair point, but I think the recent situation with people like Branson demanding assistance money and expecting his staff to take unpaid 'leave' has stuck in a lot of peoples throats, given the vast wealth he himself sits on.

For sure, he's a toady bloke. I was sent the book his daughter wrote when it came out. Wow. Not sure I've ever read a more self-congratulatory load of swollocks in my life (and when I say wrote, she probably paid someone peanuts to ghost write it for her).
