T-cells, by contrast, are effective as long as they recognise any part of the spike protein, so it is much harder for a virus to mutate to evade the T-cell response. “There is no way these variants are escaping T-cell immunity,” Shane Crotty at the La Jolla Institute for Immunology

?
Go back and read the report.

Well said, imagine the kids being born right now growing up in a shi*t world like this as 10 year olds later on in life?. It just cannot be allowed.
Well, just how are we going to turn it round?
A world of finite resources, delicately balanced, a world where economic success is measured on growth of GDP .
A world which is rapidly being destroyed by its most advanced life form, the human race.
If we continue to follow our present path then there will be nothing left for future generations.

The report doesn't state anything significant. States that people who aren't vaccinated are at risk (obviously) and that there could be further variants (obviously). Its very clear that vaccinations will prevent deaths from ALL current variants.
Exactly.

There was an Italian doctor who got a BioNtech vaccine, then later contracted the virus with the N.1 spike mutation (the same one in the Brazilian variant), he didn’t get any symptoms at all, so it’s a very good chance the vaccine saved him from severe illness, hospitalisation and possible death. There is also evidence from a Cambridge study that vaccine cuts transmission, so there is a very good chance he didn’t even pass it on.

The BS over vaccines trumpeted by an the army of willing Pollyannas (you see them on here) who are wishful-thinking 'old normal' back again will be responsible for putting us back in lockdown. They just want another summer blowout.

Rinse and repeat for the next few years with hundreds of thousands dead.

Anyone who call them out on it are then gaslighted.
We can have the old normal back, just with some limits.

That's the aim of the game, or we wouldn't be bothering with the vaccines.

Wearing a mask in a shop isn't the end of the world. My point was that even if they stop in the summer, we'll be wearing them again come autumn. It's fine. That's probably ingrained in a lot of people now.

People wanting to live their lives isn't the equivalent to them having a 'summer blowout'.

We get a limited amount of time on this planet. Enjoy it.

*sigh*

You just haven't ackoweldged reality yet.

It's an uneven process, I suppose. Some have grasped the enormity of this and are adapting accordingly, others are still on that journey.

Restrictions and lockdowns cant be seasonal: why wait until its dire to lockdown?

The smart countries who are minimizing Covid19 to the status of just another nuisnace to contend with lockdown hard AT ANY POINT when it rears its head.
We cant have summers of revelry followed by a (reluctant) lockdown in autumn/winter.
If we had winter lockdowns we would save thousands of none covid deaths every year.

We don't do it.

Nor should we for covid once vaccines have been fully rolled out. This might take another autumn/winter so some restrictions might be necessary.

The risk in summer is really low so we should open up.

It's an illness with a below 1% mortality rate. The vaccines so far are working against every variant, to reduce serious illness, which reduces the strain on health systems.

They are already switching focus to tweaking the vaccines in order to be able to swiftly react to new variants.

Yes there's a long way to go, but if the aim wasn't to get back to normality, we'd sack them off and become hermit kingdoms.

When the vaccination roll-out is fully complete, it will build confidence hugely.

I would support a pre-emptive return to some degree of restrictions, perhaps short of a lockdown, over the winter this year and into early 2022. People may choose to do that anyway from an excess of caution. Behaviours like mask-wearing and social distancing will have become ingrained and comforting for some.

But we do not know for how long the vaccines will confer immunity for and bearing in mind variants and that fact that the colder weather will be favourable to the virus anyway, I'd back the Government re-introducing measures over the winter. Even as far as a mandate to work form home for those months.

We will have much more information on the efficacy of the vaccines insofar as how long they provide protection for, and they will have been adapted to meet the threat of variants in the coming months.

I don't think a full return to normality will be possible until around this time next year. And perhaps it will not ever be normality to the fullest degree we knew. It will be two years then since the emergence of covid and going into the 3rd. But in the interim I think its possible to re-open society slowly and cautiously, although this should be led by data and not dates.

Everyones perception of reality is different.

Mine is that if hospitalisation is cut by 80% and death 85% then the total number of deaths would have been less than an average flu season in the same time frame.

We have multiple vaccines with higher efficacy than flu vaccines. The vaccine development throughout means they can be tweaked easily.
