Been chatting with my mate who lives in Amsterdam this morning.

Apparently there's daily protests over there - people really kicking off about the lockdown, no route out of it and the mess that is the vaccine roll out.

It's being called the 'COVID dictatorship', apparently (or that how it translates!).

I'm fully on board with all of the vaccines and have backed the Oxford-AZ one loads of times in here.

I'm just not a vaccine nationalist. I genuinely don't care where it's made, as long as it works (which they do) and they can get it to as many people as quickly as possible (which is where the UK's risk in increasing the spacing up to 12 weeks seems to be paying off).

If you genuinely don't care, why do you go on a 150+ word offensive asking someone to not describe a vaccine as British?

Also a bit odd to get so defensive and you having "backed the Ozford-AZ one loads of times..."

Because it just leads to the same argument about people giving it one way or the other about it being British or not - and whether that makes it inherently evil in some people's eyes.

I don't think @grandjoeblue took any offence but if he did I apologise. I agree with pretty much every point he makes. I just feel stressing the whole British element ultimately leads to the same old posters having the same old arguments?

Not to jump in, but I’m guessing he calls it the British vaccine to counter certain other posters who have referred to it as the same but in a negative light. “British gnats piss” springs to mind.

The world leading british AZ vaccine works against the strain.

Its quickly becoming apparent that the AZ vaccine is the answer to all of these strains.

Fortunately the AZ vaccine is being used here which means a full reopening is possible as it prevents hospitalisation from all known variants.

You're making this up as you going along. The SA variant was not giving coverage from the AZ vaccine.

Just saying things doesn't make it true. It's the opposite end of the spectrum from anti-vaxxing what you're doing there.

But there will be risk whether we open up next week or next year (and we aren't 'opening up' in any real form until at, the very earliest, March 29th).

Less of a risk if you have the whole population vaccinated and purge the environment of space that variants can thrive in.

Vaccinate all and seal the borders from passenger traffic. Do that and then open up gradually.

But that wont happen, because the Tories and their Covid *Recovery* Group as the Praetorian Guard of big business want everything opened yesterday so they can make profits again.

They're trying to strike a balance.

Stuff needs to open. People can't keep living like this. It's crap.

Kids need to be in school. People need to be able to work without uncertainty.

There's a trade off at some point. And the vaccines are already offering a pathway to that.

It's still a long road.

All the chest thumping about vaccines when they dont get a simple thing like quarantining incoming passengers taking the piss coming in via a European country. 'kin prison sentences need handing out for scum like that.

Vaccines - yeah. 20 million yada yada yada...but if you have variants that can rip through the population and compromise those vaccines then it means f.a.

IMO the reopenings planned should be ditched.

This lot are not fit to be in office.

A full return to school should never be happening. That's driven by economic considerations.

It'll be hard to go with that for 5 weeks and stop the inevitable increase in infection levels again AND stop the clamour from the Tory CRG and their sponsors in big business who also own the media not to turn back from there.

This is an utter calamity in the making again. 123,000 dead - you'd think ANYTHING that could get us back to a situation where hospitals are groaning under the pressure again would be avoided.
