Lord knows I don't want to come over all Davek (innuendo definitely not meant), but these festivals just aren't necessary IMO. I understand massively that people in those sectors desperately need a "win" so to speak but this summer should be all about getting and keeping cases down to a minimum, getting vaccinations almost completed and ensuring people can go about their day to day lives as normally as possible. What I don't want is what happened last summer whereby we all have a good time (relatively speaking) and then we have an absolutely miserable time of it from October through to 2022. This same thinking is why I am against us hosting the Euros in this country.

I'm 28 years old. I haven't properly worked since February 2020 except for a few brief weeks in August and September last year. I am single and absolutely gagging to get out there. And I realise that last summer we didn't have the vaccines. But even so, we need to see what a winter looks like with a vaccination programme well underway and we need to get through winter without another lockdown- that is the most important thing this year. This has to be the last lockdown. And every action and decision we take should be with that in mind. We really can't afford to blow a load this summer.
No, no, no...what could go wrong?

Sounds like a mass murder event Dave.
No. It would be a well orgnaised socially distanced remembrance for the dead so far from Covid19. Almost more people lost their lives with Covid19 than the civilian casulaties of the 2nd world war.

You know that governing party that usually loves to have days of remembrance - dont you think its a bit odd for them not to have one for this? Or d'you think they dont want to put a dampner on the return to collosal mass consumerism they want to happen now?

I think once its over, we should certainly do something.

But not now?

It's more appropriate to have music festivals and football championships.

I'm just surprised they didn't try and get the Cheltenham races done next month...they love Cheltenham.
No not now, cos it isnt over yet.

Who knows when it will be over? Nobody, which is why life cant be put on hold forever, we need to learn to live with this.

The Spanish had one last autumn.

Nothing from these butchers. No recognition. And that isn't because it isn't over, it's because they want a feelgood reaction to drown out the screams so the cash registers start ringing.

You know it too.

Wait let me see if I have this right, you’re deriding having fans back at football grounds and music festivals but advocating a mass gathering to remember the poor souls who have lost their lives from COVID thus far?

No. You dont have it right.

What made you think I wanted to see a mass event for it?

Between the madness, Dave makes some good points, but so, so much madness.

I was all for the lockdowns and felt as tho we did all of them too late to be effective and it cost lives.

But, look at that Summer dip from last year and tell me any reason not to plan for normality this summer?

Of course we 100% need to be careful, but the BLM protests and the many, many public gatherings didn't cause many issues, the issues came once we left Summer and the kids went back to School.

For me the Summer wont be an issue, the issue is preparing better for Autumn.

I guess my thinking is we need to take advantage of the summer dip, not to just use it as a chance for a free for all- which however you spin it, massive attendance at festivals basically is. It’s just not necessary IMO.

This is the problem with the normality/lockdown debate. And it’s what the government continually gets wrong. They think that people are desperate for 100% 2019 normality ASAP. They are so desperate for good PR that they will do anything that seems like it will be popular.

When in reality, I think most people accept and understand we’re in an extraordinary situation. A majority of people I believe simply want to be able to go about their daily lives without too many restrictions and without fear. What does this mean? To me it means if you want to pop to town for a mooch with your mates you can. You’ll still have to wear a mask probably but that’s alright. If you want to go for a meal with your partner you can, just be prepared to wear a mask upon arrival. A drink in the pub with mates? It’s table service only and no more than say 10 of you at a table. Sunday dinner with grandparents from both sides and maybe other extended family? Go for it, everyone has had both doses of the vaccine hopefully. Hit the gym/ play some sports? We need to tackle obesity so crack on. And despite what some people think about furlough and employment grants etc, a lot of people do just want to go back to work and get out the house. To me, these are really basic, kind of small things that people really want. Things massively beneficial to your mental and physical health. Until we get these aspects of daily life back, talk of big events etc is very premature.

I’ve been to Leeds festival. Three times. Saw Metallica. Maybe took some illegal substances (Don’t tell my parents). Is it necessary this year? I’m going to have to say no. Like I said originally, we need to be able to get through winter without a lockdown. That should be the number one priority for 2021. We also need to reduce restrictions to the minimum we can get away with, so that peoples lives are not as depressing as they are now. That’s the balance that needs to be struck. These festivals don’t help with that.

You could set one up in the Ale House forum, mate. You could spin a few tunes and we could all send each other best wishes and get drunk.
