Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

It’s the whole thing, the social distancing before hand, the amount of staff required, as well as the testing.
I don't think this is going to be a thing, though (after 'everything' opens up again).

Social distancing, as it stands, is going to be a thing of the past after June 21st. In the current plan.

Again, I don't think that will actually definitely happen. Everything would have to go perfectly, which probably isn't realistic.

Its like everybody forgets last Summer, things returned very much to normal.

Hospital figures - 302 deaths were announced today, down 57 on both yesterday and last Saturday (both days’ total being 359). 257 deaths were in English hospitals, down 50 on both yesterday and last week (307). The 7 day rolling average falls to 320.43

All settings - for the 28 day cut off, 290 deaths were announced today, down 55 on yesterday and down 155 on last Saturday. The 7 day rolling average falls to 334.29

For the 28 day cut off, 493 deaths were announced today, down 86 on yesterday and down 131 on last Saturday. The 7 day rolling average falls to 485.57

Tbf I wouldn't have called it normal but there was certainly a lot less in terms of actual restrictions.

Whatever the sense or no-sense of that decision, it didn't really do anything for the case rates until September when the schools went back and stuff, and the weather got worse.

But yeah, we've got the vaccines now. Before I get called a murderer, I know they're not the magic key, but they're the only way to get back to normal properly - as is shown by Auckland's snap week-long lockdown for one case (in a country which has been having festivals and gigs to the envy of everybody over here).

I honestly think the vaccines are the magic key.

I think they're most of the way there. We just have to be sensible while they're rolled out and probably have a test and trace system in place too, so any spikes can hopefully be lessened/isolated quickly.

Whether Leeds fest counts as sensible... well we'll have to see where we are come August, I suppose.

No of course, alone they arent, but and this is a big but, you would assume "people" will have learnt from the last 12months.

Boris wont of course, cos hes an utter moron, but hopefully he listens to people with a clue a bit more.

It will 100% happen IMO.

Why wouldnt it?

We’re a way off having a hundred thousand young people congregate in a field for three days I think.

No reason why we can’t slowly open up in terms of pubs, restaurants and the like, but mass gatherings like that seem a bit premature to me.

We shall see though. All I care about is getting back at Goodison park so I’m hoping we’re at that point in august where we’re pretty much back to normal, but I think they’ll be bumps along the road with variants and stuff like that.

Still, I do think we are past the worst of it now and in a few months we will be able to do things we all used to do for the most part like the murderous scum we all are.

Well, yep, but August is five months away...

I cant predict the future mate and I'm certainly not even close to being an expert, in any field.

But I think in August, we will have a sense of normality. We will still need to be prudent and careful, but our current path takes us to a good Summer IMO.

We just need to hope things don't go tits up, which is sadly a possibility.

But we have the vaccines, they are getting better at treatments all the time, we know vastly more than we did 12 months ago.

We ain't ever saying goodbye to this, unless and you talk of variants unless it becomes the cold, but I think that's a few years down the road,

For now we need vaccines and we need to be careful, but I see no reason why we cant, well, enjoy ourselves, we all need it.

Really struggling to see how festivals with 75,000 people are going to go ahead this summer.

Strange to think in May we still won't be able to see family indoors but by July everything is going to be normal.

Agreed.

There is a massive difference between pubs and restaurants being open and a festival with 75,000 people attending. All standing in huge crowds, sharing portaloos with crap hygiene standards. You did well to escape Leeds fest without catching some disease even pre-Covid.

Vaccines do not stop infection. We can’t just go back to normal life because it’s hot outside regardless of what Boris might say, and a festival of that scale is pretty much on the extreme end of normal as you can get.

His “tests” about reopening have left a huge amount of latitude around the precise reopening schedule.

For me i’d much rather we have some restrictions on these kind of large events and have specific tailored support for these businesses and those employed by them, rather than seeing us heading into another lockdown or heavy tier system at Christmas.

Lord knows I don't want to come over all Davek (innuendo definitely not meant), but these festivals just aren't necessary IMO. I understand massively that people in those sectors desperately need a "win" so to speak but this summer should be all about getting and keeping cases down to a minimum, getting vaccinations almost completed and ensuring people can go about their day to day lives as normally as possible. What I don't want is what happened last summer whereby we all have a good time (relatively speaking) and then we have an absolutely miserable time of it from October through to 2022. This same thinking is why I am against us hosting the Euros in this country.

I'm 28 years old. I haven't properly worked since February 2020 except for a few brief weeks in August and September last year. I am single and absolutely gagging to get out there. And I realise that last summer we didn't have the vaccines. But even so, we need to see what a winter looks like with a vaccination programme well underway and we need to get through winter without another lockdown- that is the most important thing this year. This has to be the last lockdown. And every action and decision we take should be with that in mind. We really can't afford to blow a load this summer.

Between the madness, Dave makes some good points, but so, so much madness.

I was all for the lockdowns and felt as tho we did all of them too late to be effective and it cost lives.

But, look at that Summer dip from last year and tell me any reason not to plan for normality this summer?

summer.webp

Of course we 100% need to be careful, but the BLM protests and the many, many public gatherings didn't cause many issues, the issues came once we left Summer and the kids went back to School.

For me the Summer wont be an issue, the issue is preparing better for Autumn.

Yeh I agree. Say Goodison with 10,000 there I'm all for it. 2 hours with people pretty nearby but good measures in place seems achieveable. 72 hours of people packed together like sardines is another matter.

The timeline just doesn't make sense to me. I know the summer will be much lower risk but as I said before the gaps are weird, its 0 to a hundred in 6 weeks basically. Up until the end of May its all very restricted.
