This is mostly due to the first prioritisation groups. You'll see that it is dropping in the boomer group.
The only reason the number of vaccinations is dropping is that there has been a drop in availability of the vaccines. I saw this on the BBC earlier today. There's no mention anywhere I've seen of any increase in the number of people not turning up for their vaccination. I am in the "boomer" category you refer to and I know lots of people of a similar age. I don't know anyone who has not gone for their vaccine when they have been offered it or who will not be going at their allotted time. Where are you getting you information from?

Opening up even in a couple of weeks from now - and gradually - carries with it the seeds of a summer lockdown.

Pointless.

It's all pointless.

This government are a bunch of murderous clowns who want to throw the econlmy open again and dont want to do the hard yards of policing it....and I;m getting their apologists on here defending them.

We are in for a free for all this summer and then there will be a huge surge to contend with in the autumn and winter.

After 12 months of this 'kin lot there is no excuse to fall for this BS. The people who offer this government support are just self serving and dont give a flying one for anyone else.

Why is ANYBODY 'arriving in the country'?!

Shut the borders FFS

Well, I understand hauliers/cargo as we're an island nation - can't really stop that.

But if 15,000 people were coming in each day, I'd be expecting 5,000-ish from that going into quarantine minimum for it to have any point whatsoever.

Does anyone have real doubts that the fourth stage for COVID won't happen in 2021?

I think we'll get to stage 3 but the brakes will then be put on.

I'm very confident it won't.

That's the 1918 flu pandemic in Wales, fairly atypical of how it went everywhere. Relatively mild first wave followed by lethal second and third waves. Granted, coronavirus and flu aren't the same thing, but respiratory pandemics tend to follow this general pattern.

Critically, in 1918 there was no vaccination program in effect, so what you saw was the second wave batter most, then the third wave take the remainder - for COVID, there won't be anything like that third wave.

What we will probably see around October again is an increase in infections, but no return to lockdown, as there will be no subsequent increase in deaths and hospitalisations as a result, meaning no pressure on the NHS, meaning no lockdown.

Everyone will be vaccinated by around July/August. At that point, this becomes a seasonal virus. The 1918 flu strain is still in circulation now with various mutations to it; COVID will become a similar thing. If COVID mutates, we meet that threat with booster shots once they are identified and before it's causing any real significant harm. Everyone admitted to A&E with a respiratory illness will be screened for COVID in the future. Our ability to turn around vaccine adaptations to meet any variant will become increasingly rapid. Vaccine take-up will increase sharply - 70% of over 65s take the flu vaccine, around 10% of every other age group; that will change. All in all, we'll be looking at sharply reduced deaths from all respiratory illness this winter, but more of it.
