In fairness the scientists seem to be doing great work identifying variants and doing mass testing in those areas. Not sure any other countries are so advanced in that area
That isn't test, track, trace and isolate though - its examining test results, which is what every country is doing (albeit without the rather false emphasis on different variant types that our media has been encouraged to adopt).
The key difference, and it is really noticeable, is how little information we have about how and where people are being infected and when and where clusters of infection are starting; countries with a working system can (and have, repeatedly and early on in the pandemic) tracked it down to a particular person or premises and put measures in place quickly enough to stop it before large-scale measures need to be adopted. We on the other hand seem to be only able to put it down to towns or cities, late enough that it makes it much more likely spread will have already happened outside those areas.
Our system is still not fit for purpose, and if it isn't fixed we as a country are not going to be as safe as we should be. If we emerge from this without one, it should be a scandal.
