Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

IMO, AZ needs to be withdrawn from the vaccine fightback against the virus for all but the under 50s.

They need to either go back and bring back some plausible data based on a hell of a lot of field work, or they need to tweak their vaccine.

Absolute crap. If you are under 50 then don’t worry, because those of us over 65 aren’t worrying either.......

I get what you say. But the AZ vaccine has not delivered in terms of data for its vaccine. I get the feeling that there';s a domino effect now working against it (not so much from a medical standpoint, but a PR one). That was of their own making.

I think it will give protection to stop people getting extremely ill - older groups and the vulnerable included. But that company and its scientists have been pretty clueless in getting their message out. I think that all came by political pressure in the UK to get their vaccine in play.
There have certainly been errors in their rollout of data (and even in their trials but those have thankfully generated useful data/positive results)

This SA variant is concerning and certainly calls for more testing/caution but I wouldn’t overreact - this was a very small trial.

The U.K. are inoculating millions, I’m not quite sure how many is needed for a trial, but I’m sure we’ve done it x100 times over.....
Trials have regular follow up covering mild/severe disease and measuring viral loads and contrasting those with a placebo group.

The UK data will obviously be very useful but for more precise statistical confidence levels and comparison to other vaccine results the data from the US phase 3 study will be important.

There are people on here worried about all this talk about the AZ vaccine as a result of ridiculous comments from Macron and other political prats. We really don’t need other uninformed people on here adding to this fear. If you fear there is an issue, then don’t have it, it’s your choice, but please keep it to yourself. The U.K. MHRA and the EU EMA have categorically stated that it is fine for all age groups. Millions of over 65’s have already had it and guess what, they seem ok. So please, just let it go and perhaps inject a little positivity into the debate instead of constant negativity...it really is helping no one...thanks.....

In a way that's what I'm saying: the problem may be more a PR one rather than medical. IMO this is a company that's made a lot of mistakes in that respect.

I agree mate and I'm probably guilty as anyone.
My fear is that the Oxford lot are already working on an update to deal with SA.

Strikes me that there is a worry about it.

peter...peter...calm down.

I get what you're saying. But equally we dont need people who also have no expertise just cheerleading a vaccine from the sidelines because it happens to fit in with their geo-political philosophy.

You are right though: there are people on here who are in a position whereby they dont know whether the vaccine they've had is going to work....and none of us have a clue other than going by what one expert says...who is then contradicted by another...and so on and so forth.

Itls early days, we just dont know. One vaccine might look like the cat's pyjamas right now only to be seen as a problem later, and vice versa.

No mate, they are just getting ahead of the game before next winter. This is exactly what they do with the flu jab....

Thought this was an interesting article

TBF reading that reminded me very much of reading articles about fracking, in which the obvious dangers of flammable tapwater, earthquakes and pollution are presented as one side of a debate against some hypothetical benefits.

Fauci is right; until we know if it works it is best to go with what we know works.

I look forward to you not posting in this thread.

There are times for questions and there are times for just going with the scientists. This is one of those times to put our faith in the MHRA and EMA and the Oxford and AstraZeneca people. People need to relax, do as they are told and have the jab when told to do so, and trust that it will do what the scientists say it will. We’ve all been through the mumps, TB, polio etc jabs and sugar lumps...we need to get behind this.....
