These countries are bonkers - if it prevents serious illness who cares if its not as effective in preventing infection?

Long term obviously the aim should be to try wipe it out completely but at this stage its a world pandemic just stop people dying you clowns.

I get the lack of data over certain groups but right now, just surely getting doses into people is important? It's proven to help stop illness.
The AstraZenica study into the South African variant was on a demographic whose average age was 31. They accept that it would likely give protection against extreme effects of the virus for that cohort. The South Africans are, therefore, being cautious about coverage of older groups with AZ.

That's just common sense.

More details on South Africa
IMO, AZ needs to be withdrawn from the vaccine fightback against the virus for all but the under 50s.

They need to either go back and bring back some plausible data based on a hell of a lot of field work, or they need to tweak their vaccine.

Oh sorry, I thought it meant in relation to both strains, not just the SA one. They need to have more data with that.

The testing is taking place and the data will be available soon.

Also, the UK is using it for plenty of over 50s and so far there's no sign of any issues.

I'm 35
Clinically vulnerable
Had the Oxford jab

Someone give me reassurance the jab I've had will give me some normality!
Of course it will, once everyone else has had whatever jabs they are getting.

Your body has got some protection. Up to 90% they think. It's a good thing! But remember, its main job is purely to help give your immune system a leg up - and it will do that.

Stay as healthy as possible, stay sensible for now, and then hopefully later this year when the entire population is vaccinated in some form, we'll be back to some normality!

Thank you.
This south African stuff is confusing me.

The Oxford jab has shown good performance, especially at reducing severe disease/death, on the strains currently prevalent in the Uk mate.

I would imagine they will continue to use the AZ in S Africa, just do it under test conditions ie get informed consent from the participants and do more follow up to determine viral loads and symptoms etc than a widespread rollout.

I wouldn’t make that assessment Dave and we’ll soon get a lot more data anyway from the US trial.

I get what you say. But the AZ vaccine has not delivered in terms of data for its vaccine. I get the feeling that there';s a domino effect now working against it (not so much from a medical standpoint, but a PR one). That was of their own making.

I think it will give protection to stop people getting extremely ill - older groups and the vulnerable included. But that company and its scientists have been pretty clueless in getting their message out. I think that all came by political pressure in the UK to get their vaccine in play.
